Du Yu looked at the shifty-eyed Shen Shi, then at the two sons of Kua’e and Zhan Qisheng, a smile gradually spreading across his face.
“Fantastic, isn’t everyone here now?”
“Everyone is here?” The group exchanged confused glances.
Du Yu ran out the door, grabbed Shen Shi, and asked, “Shen Shi, if I gave you a piece of ordinary adamantine stone, could you infuse it with spiritual energy?”
“Ah! Operator!” Shen Shi had not expected Du Yu to assign him a task the moment they met. He hurriedly asked, “Are there any other requirements? Is this item meant to repel enemies and injure people, or to protect the body and strengthen the constitution?”
“No requirements whatsoever. Just infuse it with spiritual energy,” Du Yu instructed.
“Huh?” Shen Shi gaped. “I have never refined such a dharma treasure before. If it is merely imbuing a stone with spiritual energy, I can get it done in a matter of moments.”
Du Yu nodded. “Then nothing can go wrong. The two sons of Kua’e will go fetch ordinary adamantine stones and carve them into the shape of surveillance monitors. Shen Shi, you will imbue each of these stones with spiritual energy. Finally, Old Zhan will cast his time magic on them. By fully utilizing everyone’s strengths, we should be finished in no time.”
Naturally, Zhan Qisheng, Shen Shi, and the two sons of Kua’e had no idea who the others were, but since Du Yu had made the request, they could only focus on completing their assigned tasks.
“Ah, today is going so smoothly!” Du Yu exclaimed. “My new colleagues, let me show you to your offices. Qu Xi, Shen Shi, Little Zhan, follow me.”
Only then did the three look at each other. New colleagues?
A Grand Pivot, a Rogue Immortal, and a sinner?
Xiao Qi was also completely dumbfounded. How had the Legend Administration Bureau acquired so many new faces in the short time Du Yu was away?
“Du Yu, there is no need to arrange a room for me,” Zhan Qisheng declared. “I will come and go as I please.”
“That won’t do,” Du Yu refused. “Even if you don’t stay in it, I still have to set one up for you. It makes our organization look professional and highlights our excellent employee benefits. That is how we recruit top talent.”
Setting Zhan Qisheng aside, Du Yu went on to explain the Legend Administration Bureau’s working system to Qu Xi and Shen Shi. He temporarily assigned them the positions of “Assistants.” With Dong Qianqiu currently absent, he had to take matters into his own hands.
After finishing all these arrangements, Du Yu was just about to go visit Dong Qianqiu when he received a phone call from Nezha.
“Little hero Nezha?” Du Yu answered. “What is it?”
“God of Trends, Clairvoyant and Clairaudient have thoroughly investigated the matter. I will now explain the legends prepared by the four envoys. You must listen carefully.”
Du Yu’s expression instantly turned serious. He hastily asked Xiao Qi for the paper and pen she usually used for drawing, then said, “Go ahead.”
“The ‘Controller’ Chada from the British Empire has prepared an English ‘urban legend.’ It revolves around the homicidal maniac who terrorized the streets of London in 1888, ‘Jack the Ripper.'”
Startled, Du Yu quickly jotted it down. If they had not investigated this urban legend beforehand, it would have been nearly impossible to anticipate.
“I thought it would at least be ‘King Arthur’ or ‘Robin Hood’ or something similar.”
“The legend prepared by the ‘God of Legends’ from the Greek Territory is ‘Athena, Goddess of War’ from ‘Greek Mythology.’ However, Athena’s life spans a vast period, so we do not know the exact phase.”
Hearing this, Du Yu picked up his pen and swiftly scribbled down ‘Athena, Goddess of War.’
“Warang from India is usually a man of few words, and we only overheard the name ‘Bodhidharma.’ If my guess is correct, the legend he plans to invoke should be ‘Patriarch Bodhidharma.’ However, it is worth noting that ‘Patriarch Bodhidharma’ is both an Indian legend and a legend of our nation. After all, according to historical records, ‘Bodhidharma’ was born in India but introduced Buddhism to our lands. This legend involves religion, politics, military affairs, humanities, and many other aspects. The difficulty of handling it should be incredibly high.”
Du Yu nodded slightly and noted that down as well.
“Currently, the highest difficulty likely belongs to the lead girl, the ‘Time Master’ Asuka Shiranui from Fusang. She has prepared the ‘Fusang Creation Myth’—Izanagi. Among all legends, a ‘Creation Myth’ is unequivocally the hardest. However, I have little knowledge of Fusang culture, so you will need to search for the relevant information yourself.”
After writing down the names of the legends one by one, Du Yu hurriedly thanked Nezha. The young deity had truly been a massive help this time.
Hanging up the phone, Du Yu quickly sought out Xiao Qi, who happened to be chatting in Qu Xi’s room. “Sister Qi, I need you and Qu Xi to put in some hard work. Please investigate these legends for me. I need to understand the details and figure out any potential problems that might arise ahead of time.”
The two silently accepted the paper. Qu Xi looked like she wanted to say something, but she swallowed her words.
Not long after, the two sons of Kua’e returned, carrying two colossal adamantine stones. They landed in the courtyard, set the stones down, and reached out their hands, tearing chunks off the tough rock as easily as if they were ripping apart tofu. Then, channeling their magic, they polished and shaped the material. In just a few moments, several stone slabs shaped like display monitors stood tall on the ground.
“Shen Shi, come out and get to work!” Du Yu had not expected the Kua’e brothers to be so fast, so he quickly called for Shen Shi.
Receiving his orders, Shen Shi brought his myriad of tools into the courtyard. Working with both hands, he summoned various magical artifacts resembling hammers and chisels. It did not take him long to finish the first stone slab. After Shen Shi’s refinement, the slab instantly overflowed with spiritual energy.
Seeing this, Du Yu turned and asked Zhan Qisheng, “How about it? Can you cast your spell now?”
“I can… These stones are even better than the adamantine stones we used before. I believe they will last another few thousands of years without any issues.”
With the bustling efforts of this makeshift renovation squad, the monitors lit up one by one. Various legends were gradually recorded, and the Legend Administration Bureau began to regain its former glory. Following Du Yu’s instructions, the younger Kua’e brother placed the monitors in their designated positions.
Du Yu could not help but reminisce about his early days here. The dazzling array of legends displayed before his eyes felt as though it had just happened yesterday.
In merely a single day, one-third of the Legend Administration Bureau’s equipment was already back online.
Taking advantage of a break, Du Yu visited the Hall of Impermanence to check on Dong Qianqiu. Under the care of the phantom demons, her complexion had improved significantly, and she was expected to wake up in two or three days.
Another day passed. Xie Jin and Nezha arrived, bringing with them a massive crowd of wandering ghosts and rogue immortals from the Heavenly Court.
Du Yu quickly called Xiao Qi and Qu Xi to begin the interview process.
“Do you two know how to conduct an interview?” Du Yu asked.
“No,” they answered in unison.
“Here is the plan. I will interview the first person while you two observe. Once you learn the ropes, you will copy my approach, and we will split into three groups to recruit talent.”
The three of them set up tables and commenced the interviews right in the courtyard of the Legend Administration Bureau. Although they could not clearly see everyone outside, the bustling noise suggested a substantial crowd.
“Ahem!” Du Yu cleared his throat. Even though he put on a professional front, it was his first time interviewing anyone, and he felt slightly nervous. “First candidate, please.”
A young girl dressed in black slowly walked in through the door. Upon seeing her, Du Yu, Qu Xi, and Xiao Qi were utterly stunned.
After a moment, the girl finally spoke.
“Isn’t this an interview? Why is no one talking?”
“Uh… please, please introduce yourself first…” Du Yu stammered.
“Fan Xiaoguo of the Black Impermanence family,” the girl in black said slowly.
“Fan Xiaoguo… may I ask… why do you want to work at our organization?”
“The ancestor arranged it. I cannot disobey,” the girl replied dryly.
“Th-then, may I ask what special skills you have?”
“I don’t know how to do anything, and I’m lazy to death,” Fan Xiaoguo said impatiently. “I demand a two-hour lunch break every day. I work nine-to-five, take weekends off, require a triple bonus at the end of the year, and I must have a cup of milk tea every single day. If even one of these conditions is not met, I will skip work immediately.”
“Alright, approved,” Du Yu nodded. “Get ready, and you can start tomorrow. Next candidate, please.”
“Huh?!”
Fan Xiaoguo, Xiao Qi, and Qu Xi all froze in disbelief. The crowd waiting to be interviewed was just as baffled.
What kind of logic was that?
“Du Yu, what are you trying to accomplish here?” Xiao Qi whispered.
“This is a gesture of goodwill from the Fan family. She passed up a prime position as a ‘Ferryman’ to lower herself to our Legend Administration Bureau. If I reject Fan Xiaoguo, how could I ever face Fan Wujiu again? Besides, having Fan Xiaoguo here means we can foster a closer relationship with the Black and White Impermanence in the future,” Du Yu explained softly. “Don’t copy me on this one. That candidate was a special exception. I’ll demonstrate another one for you.”
Fan Xiaoguo sighed and turned to leave. Another young woman walked through the door.
Du Yu scrutinized her carefully. After confirming that he did not recognize her, he said measuredly, “Hello, please introduce yourself.”
“My name is Yang Yu. I am from the Heavenly Court.”
“Why do you want to work at our organization?”
“I’ve been looking for a job recently. I heard the Legend Administration Bureau was hiring, so I came over to take a look.”
“Hmm.” Du Yu nodded. That was a perfectly reasonable explanation.
“Then what are your requirements?” Du Yu asked.
“I don’t ask for much… I also want to work nine-to-five, take weekends off, and receive a triple bonus at the end of the year. I can do without the milk tea…”
“Denied. We cannot meet your requirements. Please leave,” Du Yu stated flatly.
“Huh?!”
The crowd was stunned once more, wondering just what kind of standard this guy was operating on. One moment it was perfectly fine, and the next it was an outright rejection.
“But… why? That girl just now…”
“That girl just now is a member of the Black Impermanence family. It put a lot of pressure on me, so I had no choice. After all, her family’s influence is massive…”
The girl named Yang Yu grew quite indignant upon hearing this. She snapped, “So having a massive influence means you pass automatically? If we’re talking about family influence, our ‘Yang Family Generals’ are no lesser than the ‘Hall of Impermanence.’ If you’re going to speak like that, I’m going back to report this to my ancestor right now!”
“Uh…” Du Yu froze. “The Yang Family Generals?”
