New life after death[ … words ]

“You brat!” Lady Houtu scolded angrily. “Did you forget how he hurt Yingning?”
“Hey!” Du Yu laughed awkwardly. “Boss, calm down first. There is more to Yingning’s situation! I will explain it all to you in detail when we get back. For now, let Old Zhan get ready…”
Lady Houtu let out an impatient, cold snort. She turned to Zhan Qisheng and declared, “I will give you a chance to show what you can do. If you cannot save Xu Xian, I will let you taste my wrath.”
Zhan Qisheng looked at the woman in front of him in bewilderment. Just who was she?
It was not long before Bai Suzhen and Medusa flew back to Hangzhou City. As soon as they landed, Bai Suzhen rushed into the Rejuvenation Hall with the glossy ganoderma in hand.
“I brought the herb back!”
Bai Suzhen froze. Aside from the monk and the Xiang girl, there was actually a man in black standing there.
“You are…?”
“Oh, he is a helper I invited,” Du Yu stepped forward and explained. “Did you get the glossy ganoderma? Hand it over quickly.”
“Can my husband really be saved?”
“It shouldn’t be a problem.” After taking the herb, Du Yu turned to Zhan Qisheng. “Old Zhan, this is the only stalk of the immortal herb. Do not mess this up.”
“I won’t,” Zhan Qisheng promised, taking the herb. “The solution provided by the Heavenly Venerable is so foolproof that even the most ordinary cultivator would be hard-pressed to fail.”
“That’s good.” Du Yu nodded and addressed the group. “Let’s head outside first.”
“Outside?” Bai Suzhen shook her head. “I don’t want to go out. I want to stay right here and watch over my husband.”
Du Yu pondered for a moment before replying, “I’m afraid that is not a good idea. Did you forget that he was scared to death by you?”
“Me…?” It was as if Bai Suzhen had suddenly remembered this fact. “I suppose so…”
“What if he opens his eyes and sees you again?” Du Yu reasoned. “If he gets scared to death a second time, where are you going to find another immortal herb?”
Bai Suzhen considered this for a long time before finally nodding. She turned to Zhan Qisheng and pleaded, “Fellow Daoist… I leave everything in your hands.”
“Rest assured,” Zhan Qisheng replied softly.
The group left the back room, just in time to see the pharmacy manager flicking the beads of an abacus.
“Huh? Why did you all come out? And how come I haven’t seen Little Xu today?”
“Little Xu…” Du Yu paused slightly to think, then offered, “They say a moment of a spring night is worth a thousand pieces of gold. Xu Xian was too exhausted last night, so he needs a lot of extra rest today.”
“Haha.” The manager stared blankly for a second before nodding. “True enough. Marrying two beautiful brides in one night would wear anyone out.”
Medusa scoffed coldly upon hearing this. “I am going to take a walk by myself.”
“Xiaoqing, where are you going?” Just as Bai Suzhen reached out to stop Medusa, Du Yu held her back.
Xu Xian had been turned to stone because of Medusa, so she was probably feeling a bit guilty right now.
“Old Bai, don’t bother her. Let her have some time alone.”
Bai Suzhen gave Du Yu a puzzled look, not quite understanding.
“So, what do we do now?” Shiranui Asuka asked.
“Since we have nothing better to do, let’s go out and enjoy the scenery.”
“Enjoy the scenery?!” Shiranui Asuka blinked in surprise. “Now?”
“Yeah, the beauty of Hangzhou is unrivaled. Since we are already here, wouldn’t it be a shame not to look around?”
With that, Du Yu pushed the door open and stepped out onto the street. Shiranui Asuka and Bai Suzhen followed him.
Medusa arrived in the backyard, her expression looking rather strained.
She silently pulled out her Cosmos Sack, looking utterly embarrassed.
“Damn it… Are these things really not glossy ganoderma?” Medusa examined the red mushrooms in her Cosmos Sack. “I absolutely cannot let them know that I, Emperor Medusa, actually made such an amateur mistake.”
With that thought in mind, she began looking around. Where could she secretly dispose of these red mushrooms without anyone noticing?
After wandering for a bit, she spotted a deep well.
“Perfect…”
Medusa hurriedly ran over and dumped all the vibrant, tender red mushrooms down the shaft in one go. “That takes care of it… Now no one will ever know that I cannot even tell the difference between immortal herbs and regular mushrooms.”
At the very last second, Medusa suddenly stopped.
“It would be a bit of a waste to throw them all away…” Medusa gazed at the pretty mushrooms, which she had never seen before in the Greek Realm. “Maybe I will keep one as a souvenir…”
Deciding on this, she placed a single red mushroom back into her Cosmos Sack.
…
Du Yu and the other two strolled slowly to the edge of the West Lake.
It had not yet been developed into a tourist attraction, so the lake water was crystal clear, and lotus leaves filled the pond.
Bai Suzhen’s mind remained entirely on Xu Xian. Despite the breathtaking scenery, her brow was perpetually furrowed in worry.
“Wow, it is so beautiful!” Shiranui Asuka clapped her hands in delight. “I really wish I could take a photo!”
“Take a photo, my foot,” Du Yu retorted grumpily. “You didn’t even bring a phone. What are you going to take it with?”
Hearing their conversation, Bai Suzhen couldn’t help but frown. Perhaps she simply hadn’t interacted with mortals in too long, because she could barely understand what these people were talking about nowadays.
“Senior Du Yu, this place is even prettier than Lake Biwa in our Shiga Prefecture! It is such a shame we cannot take pictures!” Shiranui Asuka admired the beauty of West Lake with a wistful expression.
“Hey, Old Bai, don’t worry so much.” Du Yu patted Bai Suzhen’s shoulder. “I told you we can save Xu Xian, so we will definitely save him. Just relax.”
Bai Suzhen nodded with a heavy heart, pleading, “I only hope that after saving my husband, you master and disciple will no longer interfere in our lives, and certainly not cause any more harm to him.”
“Er…” This was something Du Yu absolutely could not promise. Even if he didn’t want to interfere, the events recorded in the legends were far from over.
“Senior Du Yu!” Shiranui Asuka called out. “What is the name of that bridge?”
Bai Suzhen stared blankly at Shiranui Asuka and asked, “Little sister, why do you keep calling this person Senior Du Yu?”
Hearing this, Du Yu practically flew over and flicked Shiranui Asuka on the forehead. “Yeah, you silly girl! Are you stupid?! I am the monk Huijing!”
Realizing his slip of the tongue right after he spoke, Du Yu hurriedly slapped his own lips twice.
“A monk shouldn’t curse. Forgive my sins.”
“Ow…” Shiranui Asuka rubbed her forehead and complained, “You are so mean. So what if I got the name wrong? Why do you always have to hit my head…”
“This humble monk doesn’t wish to, but you often make me mad enough to die.” Du Yu hastily chanted ‘Amitabha’ twice.
“Little sister, which bridge were you talking about?” Bai Suzhen asked.
“That one.” Shiranui Asuka pointed at a bridge spanning the West Lake. “That bridge is so pretty. What is it called?”
“It is called the Broken Bridge,” Bai Suzhen replied softly.
“Broken Bridge?” Shiranui Asuka eyed the structure in confusion. “What a weird name. That bridge obviously isn’t broken.”
“I’m guessing…” Du Yu chimed in. “It must be because this bridge was broken in the past.”
Then he looked back at Bai Suzhen and asked, “Right?”
“Lingering snow on the Broken Bridge,” Bai Suzhen murmured, not even glancing at Du Yu. “The Broken Bridge is not broken, and the lingering snow is not remnants. Whenever it snows, snow accumulates in the center of the bridge. From a distance, the bridge appears to be severed, hence the name Broken Bridge.”
“Uh…” Du Yu mumbled awkwardly. “That can’t be right. This bridge definitely broke before…”
“I only hope my husband can survive this ordeal. I haven’t even toured the West Lake with him yet…” Bai Suzhen’s sorrow overflowed, her heartbroken expression evoking immense pity in anyone who saw it.
“Sigh…” Du Yu looked at Bai Suzhen’s expression and quietly sighed. “How about I teach you a mantra…”
“A mantra?” Bai Suzhen was slightly taken aback. “A mantra for what?”
“I don’t know exactly what it does either. Just recite it when you are free, it might make you feel better.”
In front of the screen, Nezha blinked. This scene felt awfully familiar.
Not giving Bai Suzhen a chance to refuse, Du Yu started speaking.
“I will say a line, and you repeat it.”
“I…”
“Waiting a thousand years for this chance~~ Just for this chance ah ah ah~~”
The atmosphere suddenly grew incredibly awkward. Both Shiranui Asuka and Bai Suzhen stared at Du Yu in utter speechlessness.
“The waters of West Lake~~ My tears~~~ I am willing to turn into… with you…”
Right at that moment, Medusa appeared from behind them and announced, “I finally found you guys. The treatment over there is finished. Do you want to go take a look?”
“Finished?” Bai Suzhen was stunned. “Already?!”
Without a second word, she left the group behind and dashed toward the pharmacy. Du Yu hadn’t even finished his song, which left him feeling a bit awkward, so he simply followed after her.
Upon entering the back room, the group saw Zhan Qisheng gently lowering a restored, human-form Xu Xian onto the bed, pausing to steady his own breathing.
“Old Zhan, is it done?” Du Yu asked.
“It’s done,” Zhan Qisheng confirmed.
Bai Suzhen immediately rushed over. Squatting by the bed, she grasped Xu Xian’s hand. “Husband… Please don’t leave me behind… We only just met…”
“Alright.” Du Yu clapped Zhan Qisheng on the shoulder. “Old Zhan, you should head back. We have too many people here, and we don’t want to cause any unnecessary trouble.”
Zhan Qisheng shot Du Yu a disgruntled glare and muttered under his breath, “What trouble could I possibly cause? Could it be that I would accidentally save another white snake?”
“You!” Du Yu knew his blunder had been exposed to everyone, so he could only whisper back, “Old Zhan, give me some face! Don’t bring that up here!”
Zhan Qisheng huffed coldly, turning to leave. “No need to see me out. And don’t ever call me over again. It’s too annoying.”
“Hold on a second!” Du Yu chased him out of the room. “I need to leave with you, or the plot is going to get completely messed up.”
With that, he turned to Medusa and Shiranui Asuka, instructing them, “You two better pull your weight. I’m going back undercover.”
Seeing no one around, Zhan Qisheng was just about to cast a spell when he suddenly thought of something. He looked back and asked Du Yu:
“By the way, Old Du. A female cultivator arrived at the Legend Administration. She has an astonishing aura and a rather high cultivation base. However, she seems to hold some sort of grudge against me. Do you have any idea who she is?”
Du Yu blinked in surprise. “There’s… someone like that? Who is it?”
“You don’t know either?” Zhan Qisheng slowly shook his head. “Never mind. Maybe I am just overthinking it.”
With a flick of his sleeves, he vanished into thin air.
