Although that was the case, under the gaze of the public, to be forced into retreat by a single sword strike would, if word got back to Mount Ling, likely make him the butt of everyone’s jokes.
Humiliated, he was filled with rage, yet unable to show it, and his face turned crimson with the effort of holding it back.
Faming shook his head slightly as he watched. Galan’s current demeanour was far removed from that of the Buddhist Sect; his mind was overly clouded by greed and anger, far from the temperament a monk should possess.
However, this was not an isolated case. As the Buddhist Sect grew increasingly powerful, more and more people on Mount Ling had become like this.
They were no longer content with living a life of poverty; having gained powerful abilities, they urgently sought positions that matched their power, which contradicted the original principles of the Buddhist Sect.
This was precisely why many monks with pure hearts decisively left Mount Ling. They walked barefoot across the Mortal World, actively embodying the principles of the Buddhist Sect.
These individuals were known as ascetic monks; often emaciated and with withered faces, their understanding of Buddhist Law and insight into the great dao of Heaven and Earth were unmatched.
Suddenly, the urge to become an ascetic monk sprang up in Faming’s heart.
Yet at this moment, he was also unwilling to see Lin Fang escape, especially since the matter of the destroyed Buddhist Treasure with him had not yet been settled.
Faming threw the Purple Gold Alms Bowl in his hand into the air. The bowl, encrusted with scriptures, immediately emitted a golden light that enveloped Lin Fang’s form, and a tremendous suction force emanated from the bowl, attempting to pull Lin Fang inside.
“I am not Bai Suzhen!” Lin Fang laughed loudly. A subtle golden light flickered on his body, instantly causing the alms bowl to lose its direction and fall from the sky into his hands.
“Monster, still trying to run!” Faming shouted solemnly; he was not about to let Lin Fang go so easily.
“Monk Faming, you are not Fahai and I am not Bai Suzhen. If you want to catch me, you’ll have to try harder,” Lin Fang laughed heartily, his figure flashing as he dashed northward.
Faming did not understand the meaning of Lin Fang’s words— who Fahai and Bai Suzhen were— but one thought dominated his mind: to capture Lin Fang, who had dared to destroy a Buddhist Treasure, and bring him before Buddha to repent.
However, how could Lin Fang allow himself to be captured so easily? He was seen weaving through the crowd, and in no time at all he broke through the encirclement and headed north.
Galan roared loudly, “Stop him!”
Countless Buddhist Soldiers, as if possessed, surged toward Lin Fang.
Lin Fang, looking at the Buddhist Soldiers with bloodshot eyes, felt even more admiration for the Buddhist Sect’s brainwashing tactics.
Yet at this time, he was no longer someone who could be restrained by mere numbers; even if these Buddhist Soldiers fought fearlessly to the death, they had no hope of stopping his escape.
Suddenly, Lin Fang summoned the Glazed Pagoda; amidst a dizzying whirl, the Buddhist Soldiers rushing towards him vanished without a trace.
Galan rubbed his eyes in surprise and gazed at the now empty scene, feeling a surreal sense of disbelief. Where had all the Buddhist Soldiers he led gone?
The Glazed Tower emitted a brilliant light, and from it burst forth a fierce fire— the Samadhi True Fire, carrying a heat potent enough to incinerate everything, aimed directly at their faces.
The enormous Golden Bell appeared, blocking the raging flames. However, the indestructible nature of the Samadhi True Fire exerted itself, as the flames followed the bell ascending, enveloping it.
“Amitabha Buddha!” Monk Faming whispered Buddhist sutras, his fingers forming a seal, when suddenly a great Buddha descended, flicking away the raging flames. The two looked all around, but Lin Fang was nowhere to be seen.
Seeing this, Gālan’s face turned ashen. He had thoroughly failed this time. Not only had he not completed his fiercely sworn mission, but he had also lost many Buddhist Soldiers in vain, and he did not know how to explain to the people of Mount Ling upon his return.
However, at that moment, he saw the contemplative Monk Faming and suddenly had an idea. He wanted to pin the blame for this mishap on Faming.
Thus, with a hypocritical smile, he said, “Master Faming Zen, the failure of this mission is all due to me. I wonder what plans you have for the future.”
Although he spoke thusly, Gālan had already decided in his heart that, no matter what, he must persuade Monk Faming not to return to Mount Ling, thereby creating room for his own schemes.
A trace of desolation appeared on Monk Faming’s face. He had confronted Lin Fang several times, but each time the man had escaped, and over time, he could feel the man’s power growing stronger.
“Amitabha Buddha, I plan to return to Mount Ling to confess my faults,” Monk Faming said solemnly.
Gālan quickly interjected, “Master, that must not be! This defeat can only be said to be due to the monster’s cunning, and it has nothing to do with you!”
“Furthermore, the vast Buddhist Sect, spreading the Buddhist Law, and transforming the Mortal World into the Buddha Kingdom are tasks that only a high monk like yourself can accomplish. How can you talk of giving up over such a minor matter? You must know that the people of Mount Ling are currently unsettled. If there is any delay, won’t it hinder our great Buddhist cause?”
Faming looked at Gālan in surprise, unsure of the meaning behind his words.
“This matter is originally my responsibility. It is I who should go to Mount Ling to confess my faults. I know you still have the important duty of spreading the teachings. Why not leave now to redeem your merits? I will handle the affairs at Mount Ling,” Gālan spoke righteously, as if a martyr.
Monk Faming looked at him anew, not expecting the usually profit-minded Gālan to display such a noble side, realizing that one must not judge people too superficially.
Deeply moved, he quickly responded, “How can that be?”
But Gālan stopped him, saying, “I am originally in charge of external affairs. Even if I am blamed, it would merely mean continuing the pursuit of this monster, which corresponds with my intention. Master, it is better to consider the bigger picture.”
Upon hearing this, Monk Faming no longer insisted and, after bowing to Gālan, he headed East. He was going to the East to spread the Buddhist Law, establish temples, and guide the believers.
Gālan watched Monk Faming’s departing figure with a smirk of success. Monk Faming was still too naive, too ignorant of the ways of the world.
He had easily believed Gālan’s glib words. If it had been someone who had spent many years among the Mortal World, they would have probably sensed Gālan’s treachery right away.
Yet Monk Faming always thought Gālan was dedicated to the public good, choosing to go to Mount Ling alone to promote the Buddhist Law.
“Damn monster, just wait, I will kill you next time!” Each time he thought of the humiliation Lin Fang had brought him, Gālan gritted his teeth in anger.
His figure quickly vanished into the dense forest, heading straight for Mount Ling.
Atop Mount Ling is the Eight Treasures Merit Pool. Any believer’s soul who ascends to the Western Heaven after death jumps into this merit pool. Transformed by the Power of Faith, they become Buddhist Soldiers living on Mount Ling.
