“I won’t be coming out after this trip,” Old Catfish said somberly from a corner.
“What, old fellow, have you saved enough money?”
“My grandson is about to join the army at the Dragon Palace, thanks to His Majesty’s grace. Finally, our entire family doesn’t need to engage in such activities anymore,” Old Catfish said with a smile, his words filled with pride.
“Wow, Old Catfish, you’ve really kept this hidden. Having such a promising grandson, how come you’ve never mentioned him before?”
Hearing this, Old Catfish’s face showed a hint of embarrassment as he said, “Cough, you know how it is, my family is large, and there are so many grandchildren, I can’t possibly keep track of them all.”
“The little guy has really shown spirit, used to be as dumb as a post, but recently he’s had a breakthrough, improving rapidly in strength, and even caught the eye of the Second Prince of Dragon Palace, who made an exception to let him in.”
“Ah, this truly is a great joy. Old Catfish, you can’t be stingy this time; you must invite us all to gather,” the crowd said, lavishing praise on Old Catfish.
This made Old Catfish’s face bloom with a smile as if flowers had emerged, joyfully accepting everyone’s compliments. At this moment, he felt as though he had transcended his current social class, becoming a superior monster.
The surrounding monsters, no matter how much they disliked him on normal days, now all wore smiles on their faces. After all, no one wanted to make an enemy of someone with such a promising future.
As they spoke, the large ship slowly moved towards the sea, and suddenly, a flash of light passed, the ship abruptly descended, sinking to the bottom of the water. The influx of countless seas into the ship only made these monsters let out joyful cries.
They were originally sea monsters, and only at this moment did they truly feel comfortable in their bodies. The only dissatisfaction was being unable to leave the ship.
The large ship moved stealthily under the sea, and while other monsters cast curious glances, sensing the aura on the ship made them avert their eyes, as no monster dared to intercept a ship from Dragon Palace.
The leading monster lay in his spacious room, humming a tune he had sneakily learned from the Mortal World, greatly enjoying a moment of peace.
Yet in his heart, he was planning where to go for pleasure after completing this mission.
“Boom,” a noise sounded, and the still sailing ship came to a halt.
The monster quickly got up, grabbed his harpoon, and strode out of his room to the deck.
“Who dares to intercept a ship from Dragon Palace?” the monster roared, looking around, but found no trace of people, only a golden barrier across his path, blocking their way.
“What is this thing, when did it appear?” the monster muttered to himself, staring at the barrier, puzzled how it had appeared out of nowhere so soon after they left Dragon Palace.
Just then, a tremendous force struck, and the entire ship uncontrollably soared upward.
Above the water surface, a Buddha sat on a Lotus Platform, with a golden Giant Bell beside him emitting dazzling golden light, clearly a treasure of the Buddhist Sect.
Upon seeing this Buddha, the original ferocious monster immediately plastered a flattering smile across his face.
“I am unaware which Buddha from Mount Ling has graced us with his presence; your disciple bows sincerely, bows sincerely,” he said, prostrating himself respectfully on the ground.
“I am Merit-Virtue Blossom Buddha, here to trace the Monster’s path,” Buddha stated succinctly.
“Reporting to Buddha, this ship belongs to the Northern Sea Dragon Palace and only carries little demons from the Northern Sea. There are none of the monsters your holiness is in search of,” the monster said very respectfully.
“That Monster has vast Divine Skills, adept at transformation, capable of hiding the divine secrets. If it has blended among you, how could you recognize it? Bring everyone out for inspection immediately,” Merit-Virtue Blossom Buddha demanded, unwilling to waste words.
The Monster knew the name of the Dragon Palace held no sway here, so he called forth all the monsters in the ship, who crowded the deck.
The golden Giant Bell released a dazzling brilliance over the assembled monsters, but yielded no results. Merit-Virtue Blossom Buddha then put away the Treasure and asked, “Is there anyone else on the ship?”
“Only a few injured individuals left, unable to move and didn’t come out.”
“Go down and check. If there is nothing amiss, let them leave,” Merit-Virtue Blossom Buddha instructed a monk beside him.
The monk bowed respectfully before descending through the clouds with a measured pace into the cabin, immediately seeing the monsters lying in the water, incessantly wailing.
The monk frowned slightly and brought his hands together, “Amitabha Buddha, good indeed, good indeed.”
The air was thick with a dizzying scent. The monk, radiating Buddha’s Light, quickly surveyed the surroundings and hurried out of the room, signaling they could leave.
The Monster nodded and bowed profusely in gratitude as he saw the monk off, then turned and sternly rebuked, “What are you looking at? Get back now, we’re setting off immediately.”
Only then did the monsters slowly make their way to their rooms, and the big ship started up again.
“What a thing, only bullies us, but gets scared out of his wits by a few bald heads,” a Little Monster disdainfully remarked.
“What do you know? Those bald heads are no ordinary folks.”
“What’s so extraordinary about them? Could they be mightier than His Majesty the Dragon King?”
“Shut up if you don’t know. That’s the Buddha from the Buddhist Sect, a top figure in the Three Realms. Even His Majesty has to nod and bow in their presence. Our Commander can’t even get an appointment on an ordinary day,” an older Monster remarked gravely.
“So powerful. I wonder if I could join them.”
“Give up on that idea, the Buddhist Sect isn’t open to just anyone.”
“But they’re pursuing someone with such pomp; even Buddha is involved.”
“I know about that,” Old Catfish suddenly said, all mysterious.
“Old Catfish, you know?” someone asked in disbelief.
“Of course, I do. When the warrant was issued, my lad was at the Dragon Palace, so he heard a few things,” Old Catfish said, brimming with pride.
“Hurry and tell us.”
Old Catfish cleared his throat and declared, “It’s said that the Buddhist Sect is after a Monster named Lin Fang.”
“He’s no ordinary one. Heard that he and the one called the Great Sage Pingtian, King Niumo, together defeated the Buddhist Sect’s Maitreya.”
Seeing the puzzled looks on the others’ faces, Old Catfish realized that many didn’t know much about Maitreya and said somewhat proudly, “Maitreya is not just any Buddha. He is the Future Buddha Ancestor who will inherit the leadership of the Buddhist Sect.”
With this statement, everyone finally understood the significance of Maitreya. Someone who would lead the Buddhist Sect couldn’t be weak, but the thought that the Buddhist Sect was tracking down a Monster who could defeat such a formidable person explained the grand display.
