The Kings Mistress Chapter 61

Jealous?[ … words ]

[ … words ]

Sierra looked at them, wide-eyed. She was too stunned to speak. She tried mouthing a reply but no words came forth to her lips. As she began to blush, Sierra looked away from all of them.

“I don’t know what y’all heard but I definitely did not say I was jealous.”

“Yes! You did! Oh come on, Sierra, don’t deny it! What’s the use of denying it anyway? It’s clear the both of you have a thing for one another,” Myra said without skipping a beat.

But her last sentence gave the rest of them pause. Now it was Myra’s turn to deny that she had ever spoken those words. Sierra turned back to look at her. With each step she took toward the princess, the princess took a step back.

“What did you say? We have a thing for each other?” Sierra cautiously paraphrased Myra’s words.

“You didn’t hear it from me!” Myra yelped as she squinted her eyes shut and placed her hands out in front of her.

She wasn’t supposed to say any of it. It was an observation she had made after interacting with the King and Sierra. She tried to escape, hoping to make it back to the lodge and lock herself in her room. She had to get away from Sierra as soon as possible so that she would not say anything else she should not have said.

But just as she took one step in that direction, Sierra was already ahead of her. Her movements were so quick, that even Ida couldn’t see her movements. In her eyes, it was as if Sierra had moved from one space to another in the blink of an eye.

“I’m not letting you go anywhere until you explain yourself, Myra,” Sierra said sternly as she placed her hands on her hips.

She did not wish to threaten her friend, but she insisted on finding out the truth behind what she meant. Myra gulped as she continued to step backward, afraid of facing Sierra’s wrath.

Finally, she relented.

“Fine! I’ll tell you,” she confessed.

As it turned out, during the course of the dinner, King Alistair took the opportunity to ask Myra a few questions about Sierra. He asked her about what sort of person she was like when she was around her.

He wanted to know about her likes and dislikes.

“Is that all?” Sierra asked as she narrowed her eyes.

There was something about the way Myra refused to look into her eyes that gave Sierra pause. There was something else she was not telling her. Myra gulped as a droplet of sweat trickled down her forehead. She prayed to her Patron to bless her with the courage to speak.

“I’m not going to do anything to you, Myra,” Sierra offered as terms for finding out what it was, “I promise.”

With Sierra’s assurance, Myra took a step forward and attempted to explain it to Sierra in a low hush voice. But her voice was as soft as a whisper, she could barely hear a thing.

“What did you say? I can’t hear you.”

As it turned out, during the course of their conversation about Sierra, Myra told Alistair about a certain conversation she and Sierra had prior to the dinner. She told him about their exchange, where Myra commented that Sierra was his favorite.

“Please Myra, please tell me you didn’t,” Sierra pleaded as she buried her face in her hands.

She knew exactly where this was going. There was no one to save her from this level of embarrassment. Myra told Alistair her response.

’If I’m his anything, I’m his jester.’

Sierra felt like her world was crashing down around her. There was no hole deep enough for her to jump into in shame.

“You told him, in verbatim?” She asked, hoping for a flicker of hope.

Myra did not even give her a verbal response, she slowly nodded. Sierra buried her face in her hands once more. She could feel the heat on her cheeks, spreading throughout her face.

“It’s not that bad, Sierra. Trust me on this.” Myra tried to lighten her woe.

“It’s so embarrassing. How am I ever going to face him in the future? How am I going to face anyone in the future?”

True to her own words, she was now a fool.

“At least he didn’t take it negatively,” Myra continued.

“What do you mean? What was his response like?”

Alistair’s first response was laughter. Even Myra was caught off guard by his response. For a moment, she thought he might get angry. But much to her surprise, he found it amusing.

“Of course he would,” Sierra muttered beneath her breath in defeat.

“He also said something after. Once he stopped laughing.”

“What was it?”

“He said, I am never letting her live that down.”

Her fate was sealed.

Back in Celestial Lodge, a nefarious plot was brewing in the background. Princess Cassandra and Agnes had planted their spies all around Vargos Castle in an attempt to gather useful intel that would help them become the King’s concubine.

They had spared no expense in doing so. While there were some key areas they were never able to get information out of, such as the King’s Quarters, other areas were not so well guarded.

That included the Queen’s Quarters.

“Did you say Sierra and the Queen met in secret?” Agnes gasped in shock as she whispered to Cassandra who had just informed her of the news.

According to a trustworthy informant, they found out that the Queen was entertaining a unique guest in private. Agnes’ informant told them about the messenger who came to visit Sierra just moments before.

“But how is any of this possible?” Agnes asked, baffled by how things came to be.

Based on more information they had gathered, all the princesses were in their individual rooms for the entire night. No one left it. They tried to get the message that had been passed to Sierra, but they turned up empty-handed too as the letter had been burnt.

“There might be secret passageways throughout Vargos Castle,” Cassandra suggested.

There were rumors amongst the servants and maids about it. That was known. However, only a selected few knew where they were and where they led to. It was entirely plausible that Sierra found one in her room and used it.

“Do you think perhaps she might have left through the window?” Agnes said.

“That might be it. With how wild she seemed to be, I wouldn’t be surprised.”

“But do we know about what was discussed?” Agnes followed up with another question.

Synopsis

Princess Sierra left her home kingdom behind to become the concubine of King Alistair. That is what everyone believes. That is what the official records state. That is what the marriage contract declares.

But here is the truth. Sierra is no princess.

She is the adopted daughter of a general, a knightess trained for battle, not for ballrooms. Her hands are more comfortable holding a sword than a silk fan. Her heart understands loyalty, duty, and sacrifice. It does not understand politics, lies, or pretending to be someone she is not.

Yet there she stands, dressed in royal silks, wearing a false crown, playing a role that was forced upon her. The real princess could not, or would not, accept this marriage. So threats were made. Arms were twisted. A knightess was threatened and given a false title to take the place of the woman who was supposed to be here.

Every day in King Alistair's court is a battle Sierra was never trained to fight. One wrong word could expose her. One suspicious glance could unravel everything. The servants watch. The nobles whisper. The truth waits like a blade hanging over her neck.

But fate has a cruel and wonderful sense of humor.

Despite all the odds, despite the lies stacked against them, despite the fact that she is not the woman he thinks she married, King Alistair falls hopelessly in love with her. Not with the false princess. Not with the title. With Sierra. The knightess. The fighter. The woman who never wanted any of this.

He looks at her like she hung the stars. He defends her against every whispering courtier. He gives her the one thing no one ever offered before. His heart.

And Sierra? She is falling too. Straight into the arms of a man who has no idea who she really is.

What will happen when her identity is revealed? Will their love survive the truth, or will the lies destroy everything they have built? The kingdom wants an answer. The court wants a scandal. Sierra just wants to know if love can be stronger than a crown.
