The Kings Mistress Chapter 154

In the mountains[ … words ]

[ … words ]

After some time, she noticed something changing in the air. Not only did she feel a little colder, but she also noticed that the cat was slowing down. As she peered out of the window again, she realized the scenery had changed entirely.

She was no longer in Vargos Castle.

“There she is!” Vy’s voice rang loud and clear as she waved at Sierra, while Dygo stood next to her.

The carriage door opened on its own when it came to a halt. Sierra stepped off the carriage carefully with her bag in tow, only to receive a hug from Vy. Realizing what she had done, Vy quickly released Sierra from the hug and apologized.

“Sorry, sorry! I know it’s not the customary greeting for where you’re from. I just… it’s a habit I can’t break from,” Vy laughed.

“That’s alright, Vy. No offense taken,” Sierra giggled, “Dygo, it’s good to see you too.”

“Likewise, princess,” as soon as the words left his mouth, Vy nudged him.

“My apologies Sierra, I meant no offense,” Dygo apologized immediately, realizing he had called her a princess by mistake.

“None taken. Everyone’s adjusting,” She mused.

Sierra looked all around her. As it was nighttime, she could barely see what was around her. Under the dim glow of lantern lights littered all around, she could barely make out the structure before her.

There was something unique about this place, but she could not quite put her finger on it.

Vy grabbed Sierra by the hand and pulled her towards the main building.

“We can leave the exploring for tomorrow. First, we need to get you warmer clothes, some supper, and a room for the night.”

Upon entering the main structure of the building, a calming scent of cypress and pine flooded her senses. The calming scent of wood made her feel relaxed. As she looked around the space, she quickly noticed how different it looked.

It was as if she had been transported to a different realm altogether.

“This is Yoon and Yuna, they’re like… the butlers of this place. If you ever need anything, you can check with them,” Vy introduced Sierra to the two beings in front of her.

The one named Yoon had a white-colored mask with crescent-shaped eyes and small red lips. It resembled the face of a woman, with white powder foundation and vibrant red blush on the cheeks.

Yuna, on the other hand, had a mask that resembled the face of a vermillion fox. More surprisingly, she had a dark orange bushy tail that seemed to move independently.

Seeing their masks reminded Sierra of the one Alistair wore most of the time to keep his face hidden. As she recalled the times she had seen his mask, she realized she was missing him dearly. She quickly shook her head and brought herself back to the present.

Sierra placed her hand over her heart and bowed to them, as per her customs. Yoon and Yuna reciprocated her greeting with their own.

Vy held Sierra’s hand as she brought her towards the reception area. There, Sierra got to pick out a yukata and matching slippers. All guests at the hot spring resort wore one.

It was a loose-fitted one-piece garment that resembled a robe, held together by a sash tied around the waist.

“Pick any color you like,” Vy said as she showed Sierra the options available.

Everything color imaginable was on display for her to peruse and choose. Spoilt for choice and curious about the fabric, Sierra slid her hand across each of them until she stopped at the one that caught her eye. It was a dark blue yukata with wave-like patterns at the hem and tiny white speckled stars all across the fabric.

“I’ll take this one if that’s alright.”

Yoon, who had stepped behind the counter, nodded and removed the yukata from the others. From behind, Yuna came over with a pair of matching dark blue straps and a wood base.

Together, they handed the items to Sierra with both hands and a deep bow. Sierra received them, whispering a word of thanks. She didn’t know what else to say. Once that was done, Yoon was about to guide her to her room, but Vy informed him that she could take it from there.

With that, Vy took Sierra down a walkway right next to the reception area. They passed a few corridors, all with room doors lined on both sides. After some time, they took a left turn and stopped in front of one of the doors.

“This is where you’ll be staying while you’re here,” Vy said excitedly, “since we’ve got loads to talk about, I’ll share a room with you tonight.”

She remembered the first time she came to this hot spring resort, known as Yama Yoma. She could not wait to see the look on Sierra’s face when she saw the room.

But before she could open the door, Dygo came forward and pulled Vy aside. He had his arms wrapped around her waist as their eyes met.

“My love, you’re not staying with me tonight?” The disappointment in his voice was obvious to all.

Sierra looked away and took a step to the side, hoping to give them a little more privacy. But she kept an open ear, curious to hear more of their conversation. She knew Dygo and Vy were a couple, but it was only now that she noticed the matching rings on their ring fingers.

“It’s only one night, surely you can manage,” Vy grinned.

She could tell that Dygo was still a little upset with the arrangement. Hence to make it up to him, she leaned forward and planted a kiss on his lips. She was just about to pull back, but he did not let her do so.

He only released her from his hold after they deepened their kiss a little more.

“We’re not alone, you know,” Vy whispered to him as a blush rose on her cheek as she nudged him on the arm.

Dygo cupped her chin playfully with a grin of his own, “Precisely.”

Synopsis

Princess Sierra left her home kingdom behind to become the concubine of King Alistair. That is what everyone believes. That is what the official records state. That is what the marriage contract declares.

But here is the truth. Sierra is no princess.

She is the adopted daughter of a general, a knightess trained for battle, not for ballrooms. Her hands are more comfortable holding a sword than a silk fan. Her heart understands loyalty, duty, and sacrifice. It does not understand politics, lies, or pretending to be someone she is not.

Yet there she stands, dressed in royal silks, wearing a false crown, playing a role that was forced upon her. The real princess could not, or would not, accept this marriage. So threats were made. Arms were twisted. A knightess was threatened and given a false title to take the place of the woman who was supposed to be here.

Every day in King Alistair's court is a battle Sierra was never trained to fight. One wrong word could expose her. One suspicious glance could unravel everything. The servants watch. The nobles whisper. The truth waits like a blade hanging over her neck.

But fate has a cruel and wonderful sense of humor.

Despite all the odds, despite the lies stacked against them, despite the fact that she is not the woman he thinks she married, King Alistair falls hopelessly in love with her. Not with the false princess. Not with the title. With Sierra. The knightess. The fighter. The woman who never wanted any of this.

He looks at her like she hung the stars. He defends her against every whispering courtier. He gives her the one thing no one ever offered before. His heart.

And Sierra? She is falling too. Straight into the arms of a man who has no idea who she really is.

What will happen when her identity is revealed? Will their love survive the truth, or will the lies destroy everything they have built? The kingdom wants an answer. The court wants a scandal. Sierra just wants to know if love can be stronger than a crown.
