[ … words ]

When he arrived in the palace with Kiho, Winter, and Julian, the worst had already happened.

He saw it when Kyro crushed Solaris’ heart, but he wasn’t able to stop it from happening.

As he was frozen on the spot, all he could do was watch his son fall to the ground.

[No…]

“Snap out of it, Wixx,” Kiho said, smacking his back in an attempt to wake him up from the shock of witnessing Kyro kill Solaris. “Go to Solaris.”

Then Kiho, along with Winter and Julian, ran past him to confront Kyro.

Ah, Aku Moonchester was on the verge of running away.

Winchell forced himself to snap out of it, then he approached Solaris who hadn’t noticed his presence yet.

His son’s senses must have been numb by now.

Moreover, Solaris was busy protecting someone else despite his own situation.

“I told you to run,” Solaris said weakly to Mikhail Denver who was already crying beside him. “Just leave me here…”

Winchell finally gathered the courage to speak then. “My son, how could I leave you here?”

Solaris raised his head, and it was obvious that it took all the strength left in his body just to do that. But it seemed like it was worth the effort for his son because his face lit up. “Father.”

’Father.’

He felt a pang in his chest when his son called him that.

Solaris rarely addressed Winchell as such because Solaris was too formal (and too shy) for that.

Hence, Winchell was surprised when his son called him ’Father,’ confidently this time.

[Ah, this is too cruel.]

“Yes, it’s me,” Winchell said, smiling weakly as he fell to his knees and gathered Solaris’ body in his arms. “My son, I’m sorry. I was late.”

The fight to catch Kyro and Aku Moonchester had already begun.

But Winchell didn’t care. He just put a barrier around him and Solaris to protect his son from the fight that was happening around them.

Kiho and his children (along with Mikhail Denver) were there to deal with the enemies.

This time, Winchell only focused on his dying son.

Solaris let out a weak chuckle, then he barely shook his head. “No, Father. You weren’t late. This isn’t your fault.”

“How can you say that when I was never a good father to you?” Winchell asked in a bitter tone, putting a hand over Solaris’ chest. He tried to close the hole in his son’s chest, but he knew it would be useless if he couldn’t give him a new heart. “I need a new heart…”

Where in the hell could he find a suitable heart for Solaris in that place?

[An ordinary heart won’t work. Moreover, it will take time to fix his Core…]

But he didn’t have a heart to give Solaris because he had already given his to Soleil in the past.

He didn’t realize that he said it out loud until his son replied.

“Father, even if you find me a suitable heart, it would be useless if we can’t fix my Core,” Solaris said weakly. “Kyro crushed my Core into tiny pieces. Even if it’s possible to fix it, my body won’t last without a heart.”

“We can preserve your body with Kiho’s heart–”

“Father, you know that it won’t work. As long as my Core is crushed, anything we do at this point would be useless.”

“Then are you telling me to just watch you die?!”

Winchell didn’t mean to raise his voice at his dying son, but he was so frustrated that he couldn’t do anything for Solaris until the end.

[He was the son I didn’t want at first, but he became the son I do not deserve…]

“Father, I’ve already lived a long and fulfilling life. I’m already satisfied that as a Fire Archmage with enormous flame in my body, I get to live a little more even after my heart and Core were crushed,” Solaris said, his face looked peaceful as if he had already accepted his doomed fate. “Dying here won’t give me regrets. The only thing I wanted was for the Fire Mages to be cleared of the crimes we were accused of, and to be able to live on land again. And my dream is starting to come true now. Isn’t it, Father?”

“The floating island had successfully landed, and all the civilians are safe,” Winchell said, swallowing the lump in his throat. “Now that Aku Moonchester had shown his true color as a demon, it will be easy for Soleil and the Black Serpent to clear the Fire Mages’ name once everything is over.”

“That’s a relief. I believe in the Supreme,” Solaris said, smiling. It was rare for his son to smile a lot, but it seemed like he was really in a good mood despite his situation. “Ah, Father, I realized I have just one regret.”

“What is it?”

“I couldn’t say goodbye to Solenn in person.”

Solenn.

Solaris’ one and only daughter, and Winchell’s direct granddaughter.

“I’ll take a piece of your soul and bring it to your daughter so you can say goodbye to her,” Winchell said, swallowing his sobs this time. “I can do that much, at least.”

“Thank you, Father.”

“Don’t thank me for doing the bare minimum, son.”

Solaris chuckled weakly. “Father, I know why you agreed to have me even though you had to give up Miss Luna as a result.”

“Do we really have to talk about that now…?”

“Father, you know about the Abyss on the Plane, don’t you?” Solaris confronted him lightheartedly. “You know that we need a huge amount of divine power to remove the Abyss on the Plane. Hence, you decided to conceive an heir that you can use to do the job.”

“How did you even know that?”

“It wasn’t me who found out,” Solaris said. “Solenn has been revived again and again on the Plane. It was when she found out about your weak attempt to remove the Abyss on the Plane in the past. You weren’t able to push through it when Miss Luna died, though. After all, you wanted Miss Luna to be reborn again. But if you remove the Abyss on the Plane, then Miss Luna might not be able to be reborn because of the complicated past she had with the Moonchesters.”

“That wasn’t the only reason why I didn’t sacrifice you even though it was my intention at first,” Solaris said firmly. “I may be a neglectful father to you, but I wasn’t that cruel to sacrifice my son’s life for my greed.”

“I know, Father.”

“I’m sorry, Solaris,” Winchell said, his tears rolling down his cheeks quietly. “I’m so sorry for being a horrible father to you.”

“Father, that’s not what I want to hear from you.”

Ah.

This was really cruel.

“Thank you, Solaris,” Winchell said, forcing himself to smile despite the tears on his face. “Thank you for being born as my son. For being the Fire Archmage that loved and protected the Fire Mages after Soleil and I both disappeared. I do not deserve you, but I love you.”

Solaris laughed as if he was truly delighted. “Thank you for saying that, Father,” he said, closing his eyes as if he knew that his time was over. “I love you, too, Father. You, Aunt Soleil, and my precious Solenn.”

So now, aside from having a happy life with Kiho and their son, she has a new goal: to burn down the b*tches who want to ruin her family again. *** [EXCERPT] *** [‘Why am I so horny tonight?’] Tilly thought to herself while sucking the crab leg suggestively. And then, she noticed that Captain Kiho gulped while staring at her mouth. [‘Ah, I’m not the only who’s hot and bothered here.’] She didn’t know if it was the alcohol in her system or her desperation to have a child… … but she suddenly felt like flirting with him. They were bound to get married and have a child together anyway. “Captain,” said Tilly as soon as she pulled the crab leg out of her mouth. “I can clearly see that we’re both attracted to each other. Shall we spend the night together?” Kiho remained pokerfaced but she saw panic cross his now glowing yellowish eyes. Ah, the captain was flustered. “My lady, you seem to be really drunk.” She walked towards him and when he didn’t move an inch, she stood in front of him and looked up at him with a grin. “Captain, are you the type of man who will only sleep with his betrothed?” “That seems to be the case, my lady.” He said that as if he was forcing the words out of his mouth. Plus, she could see in his eyes that he was conflicted– that it was hard for him to reject her. [‘Aw, I didn’t know that I have this kind of effect on my ex-husband.’] Or perhaps she just didn’t pay attention in the past. “Captain, I have a solution to your problem,” said Tilly in a playful voice. Then, she stood on her toes and whispered in Kiho’s ear. “Let’s get married.”
