The Broken Halo Chapter 296

Chapter 296: I Need Your Help

Everybody, including Sunless and Instructor Valdin was surprised when they saw Simon raise his hand.

Those who attended the Vertical Mobility class knew that whenever Simon brought attention to himself in a class, it never ended lightly.

Instructor Sormon can attest to this.

But what they didn’t know was that Simon actually wanted to ask a simple question.

“Yes, Broken Halo?” Instructor Valdin said with a slight tilt of his head, and visible surprise in his voice.

Simon lowered his hand.

“As a Fiend, can I use chaos runes to perform feats that only Archfiends and above can perform? Take for example, a simple fireball.”

Many Initiates blinked in surprise, not expecting Simon to ask such an…innocent question?

Even Instructor Valdin was a little bit surprised by Simon’s question, but he didn’t waste too much time answering Simon’s question.

“Yes, you can use chaos runes to perform feats like creating a fireball or earth wall.”

Simon nodded. “Thank you.”

Instructor Valdin furrowed his brows slightly, then he spoke after a few seconds.

“But one thing you should know is that it’s not so easy to be a chaos rune master when you’re not an Archfiend.”

He shifted his gaze to Sunless.

“Let’s use Sunless as an example.”

Sunless was taken aback, and she pointed at herself.

“Me?”

Instructor Valdin nodded. “Yes, you.”

Sunless blinked in surprise, but Instructor Valdin did not bother with her anymore.

“Sunless has a very high affinity for the shadow element, and though she’s not an Archfiend, she would find it very easy to impose her Will on a shadow chaos rune.”

“But that does not mean that she’ll suddenly find it very easy to create an advanced shadow rune because of her affinity.”

He paused.

“If you want to use chaos runes to bridge the gap between you and an Archfiend, it’s very possible. But you must know that creating elemental runes you do not have an affinity for would be extremely difficult for you to do.”

“And even if you want to create a rune for the element you have an affinity to, you must remember that you have not controlled your chaos, so controlling that element would not be easy.”

He shifted his gaze to Simon who had his brows slightly furrowed in thoughts.

“Do you understand, Broken Halo?”

Simon blinked, then he looked at the instructor and nodded.

“Yes, I do.”

Instructor Valdin nodded. “Good.”

Simon went back to his train of thoughts.

’Chaos runes are easier to create than order runes for me.’

This was one thing Simon realized after listening to Instructor Valdin’s explanation on chaos runes.

’The main reason I had issues learning and understanding order runes is because of those strokes that formed a rune.’

’I had to ’listen’ to the runes so that I’ll know what strokes to write, what combination to use, the fastest way to write a rune or a set of runes, and so on.’

’It was like I was doing calculus or some shitty ass maths topic. I never understood how those rune masters were able to understand what strokes to use to create an effect.’

’And I don’t even want to think about the difficulty I faced in trying to learn formations and arrays.’

A reminiscent light flashed in his eyes as he recalled the past.

’Compared to energy control where I instinctively knew what to do and I did not need to perform permutations and combinations, or compared to the sword path where I just needed to train and see my mistakes, runes were just so annoying and difficult for me to understand.’

’But chaos runes are different because if the instructor is right, then I don’t need to focus on creating a perfect structure to become a chaos rune master.’

’I’m very certain Chaos Rune Masters focus more on their Will than the structure of a Chaos Rune…or… I might be wrong though.’

’But with my Will and mental fortitude, I’m sure I’ll be able to become a Chaos Rune Master in no time.’

’I can create an incomplete rune, and it would still do what I need it to do as long as my Will is strong enough.’

’I’m sure that I’ll still need to understand the strokes and structure required to form high level chaos runes, but it won’t be as difficult as Order Runes.’

When it came to Wills, Simon was one hundred percent certain that he was number one in this class.

Even Instructor Valdin’s Will could not be compared to his, and he also had more knowledge on Wills than the instructor.

’Only if I had the full power of the Will I had back then, life would be so much easier right now.’

He leaned his head into his fist, then his gaze landed on instructor Valdin who was explaining the strokes of a basic body reinforcement rune.

’I wonder… Since chaos runes are going to be easy for me to understand, does that mean that…I’m meant to be a demon?’

’Or do demons just have it easy?’

He gently tapped his fingers on the desk as he pondered on this, and after nearly a minute, he shook his head softly.

’It doesn’t matter. Demon or human, I just want to be the strongest.’

He shifted his gaze toward Sunless. He stretched out his hand and took her book which was right in front of her.

She blinked in surprise, then looked at Simon with a light frown.

Simon ignored her, then he wrote on her book before passing it to her.

She read it with a slight furrow of her brows.

’I need your help?’

Her frown deepened in confusion, then she wrote before passing it to Simon.

Simon read it.

’Now you want my help with chaos runes? After flatly rejecting me?’

Simon’s lips twitched slightly.

’Guess she was angry about that.’

He bent slightly and wrote, then he passed it to her.

’I’m not talking about chaos runes. I need your help with something else.’

He passed it to her, and she frowned when she read it.

’What?’

She passed the book to him.

He paused for a moment, then a calculating glint flashed in his eyes before he continued writing.

’If you help me, I’ll eat breakfast and lunch with you tomorrow.’

He wrote this, then he wrote down what he wanted her to do for him. It took him quite a while, causing Sunless to raise her brow in curiosity.

Nearly thirty seconds later, he finished writing, then he passed it to her, and in the next second, the book came back sliding towards him.

He read it.

’No problem.’

His lips curled up into a smile.

’Perfect. That problem is solved then.’

‘How cliché. I’ve read countless novels where the Hero is betrayed by their companions… but was I wrong to trust those who fought beside me for nearly six decades?’ ----- Betrayal. A word many live in fear of. A word some never expect… until it happens. A word that completely shatters one’s view of life. Just like any other heroic tale, Simon was the Hero of Earth, the one who defeated the Demon King and was about to end the war between races with his companions. Yet, in the end, he was betrayed by his own companions for reasons he never understood. Instead of finding death, Simon found rebirth. To his horror, he reincarnated as the very race he had devoted his entire life to exterminating… a race he despised, feared, and was disgusted by. Reborn as a demon infant within one of the most impoverished demon tribes, Simon found himself at the very bottom of a world he once sought to destroy. Fortunately, he was not entirely abandoned. His unique Seven Star Blessing, bestowed by his patron God, followed him through reincarnation. Armed with this Blessing and the Demonic Magic of his new race, Simon now harbors an ambition greater than ever before… to rise higher than he ever did as the Hero of Earth. To become a God. But the path forward is far from simple. Betrayals from those he would never expect. Endless trials and tribulations. And the lingering question of identity… Should he cling to his past as a human hero, or embrace his nature as a demon to survive? Can Simon abandon his hatred and live among demons? Will he erase his past entirely and fully embrace his demonic nature? Will his thirst for revenge drag him deeper into darkness… Or will he rise above it? In the end… Will he be devoured… or will he devour all?
