A worse ending[ … words ]

“Saint, return to your timeline! If you continue to get in my way, we will both die!” Du Yu shouted.
Saint let out a bitter laugh. “Du Yu, I cannot go back! There is no one left in my timeline to operate the equipment and recall me. I came here fully prepared to die just to stop you. Are you still refusing to turn back?”
“This isn’t about turning back!” Du Yu roared. “I have been bossed around by you people all along, forced to survive until today while bearing unwarranted crimes. I have already decided to kill the main culprit behind this, and no one can stop me!”
“That is exactly why I am here!” Saint declared. “I am going to use my own life to stop you.”
Du Yu pulled a pitch-black scroll from his coat and said coldly, “You cannot stop me.”
Saint’s eyes widened as he stared at the Eight Directions Ghost Record in Du Yu’s hands, an ominous premonition flaring up in his heart.
“Du Yu, what are you doing?!”
Biting his own finger until it bled, Du Yu earnestly wrote the word “Saint” on the only remaining spot of the Eight Directions Ghost Record, the one designated for the Southern Evil Ghost.
“Even though you are me, and I am you, my name is not Saint.”
“Du Yu! You absolute scum!” Saint cursed vehemently. “Do you want history to repeat itself? Do you want everything to fall short at the last moment?!”
As Saint was drawn inside, all of Du Yu’s strength flooded back into him.
Now, Saint no longer existed in this timeline; he solely resided within Du Yu’s heart.
“I don’t want everything to be in vain. I just want this to finally have a conclusion,” Du Yu muttered to himself.
He raised his fist. His bones popped and cracked, sending endless waves of agonizing pain through his body. Then, gathering the combined power of the seven people within him, he aimed at the head of the Mahakala and unleashed the heaviest punch of his entire life.
Yet, in the split second his fist descended, he distinctly saw another figure standing not too far away.
Even so, he could no longer hold back his momentum. The punch landed.
The various immortal beings of Huaxia looked up, their faces instantly paling in horror. The head of the colossal black Buddha actually shattered into pieces like a smashed watermelon.
Fractures began to spiderweb across the massive Buddha’s entire body.
An apocalyptic, world-destroying power continuously surged out from the cracks.
“What is going on?!” The Western Queen Mother furrowed her brows. “Did we just beat this giant Buddha to death?”
Great Emperor Gouchen felt a deep sense of foreboding. “Everyone, quickly activate your defensive cultivation methods! This giant Buddha is going to explode!”
Hearing this, the numerous immortal beings dared not be careless, hastily circulating their cultivation methods to shield their bodies.
At that moment, Du Yu looked down at the small novice monk at his feet, whose head had just been pulverized, a whirlwind of complex emotions swirling in his chest.
‘Is it all over?’
Not far away, a figure slowly walked over.
Du Yu finally snapped out of his daze and focused his gaze. To his absolute shock, this person was actually He Suoyi!
“Old He?!” Sensing something was wrong, Du Yu immediately channeled his power again. “Why are you here?!”
‘Could he have entered through the portal?’
Du Yu clearly remembered that He Suoyi was not a Great Pivot and did not possess the abilities of an operator. How could he possibly pass through Chada’s portal?
He Suoyi offered a faint smile. “Don’t be so tense. I am not here to fight you.”
Step by step, he approached the corpse of the Mahakala and reached his hand toward the area where its heart should be.
Plunging his aged, withered hand directly into the chest of the small novice monk, he groped around for a moment before pulling out an incredibly dark object.
“The Ultimate Dark Bodhi Heart.” A smile that he could no longer conceal spread across He Suoyi’s aged face. “Du Yu, if I hadn’t followed you, I would have never obtained such a wonderful item in my entire life.”
At the exact moment He Suoyi extracted this heart, Du Yu noticed that the pitch-black space around them had noticeably brightened, as if the giant Buddha had lost its power and dimmed.
‘Bodhi Heart?’ Du Yu felt a terrible sense of dread. The Western Queen Mother had mentioned earlier that the Tathagata’s greatest strength was his Buddha Heart. If the power of the Mahakala also stemmed from this extremely dark heart, then under no circumstances could he allow He Suoyi to have it!
Du Yu leaped into the air, lunging straight toward He Suoyi.
But right at that very second, a violently turbulent sensation erupted outward.
The giant Buddha exploded in a catastrophic blast.
This explosion was far more ferocious than any Du Yu had ever witnessed. Fortunately, he was inside the giant Buddha’s body rather than on the outside; otherwise, he absolutely would not have survived the brunt of such a colossal impact.
The other immortal beings, however, were not nearly as fortunate. Even though they had activated their defensive cultivation methods, the terrifying shockwaves mercilessly blew them away.
Some of the immortal beings whose defensive cultivation methods were not robust enough were actually blasted out of existence, reduced entirely to ashes on the spot.
The explosions chained endlessly, blowing apart the multitude of black monks.
And upon death, each black monk triggered yet another explosion.
The entire battlefield became a scene of relentless carpet bombing, sending continuous shockwaves rippling out in all directions with the Mahakala as the epicenter.
Du Yu had no choice but to try his best to protect himself, squeezing his eyes shut as he barely managed to keep his footing amidst the colossal, raging gales.
‘Strange…’ a voice muttered to itself within Du Yu’s mind. It was actually Saint. ‘Du Yu! Something isn’t right. The power of this explosion is far too small!’
“Small?!” Du Yu was taken aback. “You call this small?!”
The moment he said it, he realized something. ‘Could it be because the Mahakala lost its heart?’
The massive explosions lasted for a full ten minutes before they finally, slowly died down.
Du Yu gradually opened his eyes. Although the skies had finally cleared, the sight surrounding him was utterly horrifying.
Not a single decent structure remained visible in the entire underworld. Even the Legend Management Bureau had been completely leveled to the ground.
Most of the immortal beings had already perished. Only a handful of those with extremely high cultivation or incredible luck remained, lying on the ground on their last breath.
All of this was vastly different from what Saint remembered.
“Fengdu didn’t collapse, and Mount Tai didn’t fall…” Saint muttered in a daze. “Did you really change that future of total destruction?”
Du Yu slowly steadied his breathing, feeling absolutely certain that things were not that simple.
‘If the world is destroyed every single time the Mahakala dies, then this time…’
Before he could even finish his thought, a blood-red giant Buddha slowly rose up in the distance.
The Western Queen Mother lay on the ground, staring at the scene in absolute despair. Even an immortal being as powerful as her was completely helpless in the face of this situation.
Right now, the only person who could still move was Du Yu.
Yet before him stood a giant Buddha that was even more gargantuan than the Mahakala.
Its entire body exuded an eerie, blood-red hue, and the word “Karma” was carved massively across its chest.
Du Yu swallowed hard, finally understanding what was happening.
Things were not heading in a better direction. They were heading in a much worse direction.
“Du Yu, thanks to you, I can finally do what I truly want to do.” He Suoyi’s thunderous voice slowly resonated through the air. “The Mahakala was never fit to be a true Buddha. He was always far too timid. If one truly wants to purge this world, they must possess the resolve of facing death unflinchingly.”
