One moment, Alice was in Mikael’s arms…

Next, she was somewhere else entirely, watching from outside her own body, as if she were a ghost hovering at the edge of the unfolding scene.

The garden stretched before her like a stage, and she was the only invisible spectator watching the scenes before her like a nightmare she couldn’t wake from.

She tried to move herself, tried to scream, tried to grab something, but her body refused to obey.

It was as if invisible chains had wrapped around her whole body, pinning her in place and leaving her with nothing but her open eyes.

The scenes started unfolding before her as she watched herself run towards the palace to call for reinforcement, saw both Mikael and Elara fighting against the aberration, suffering multiple injuries, but still refusing to give up.

She saw Mikael’s spell fail as the golden light of the beautiful magic circle he had traced with his own blood flickered and died out.

She saw the aberration break free from Mikael’s Siste spell’s invisible chains that had been holding it.

Its tentacles rising, twisting, and turning inwards, plunging its own head as it made a sickening crunch of bone and tearing flesh, making Alice’s stomach turn inside out.

The aberration pulled itself apart, splitting its elongated body down the middle, to its stomach.

Beneath that torn skin, the swollen belly began to bulge and stretch even further.

In the next scene…. everything went white.

The silent explosion of a blinding flash that swallowed the whole garden — the trees, the hedges, the gravel paths, everything consumed by the white light.

The loud sound came a moment later, like the sky itself was tearing apart, as Alice felt her ears ringing.

A suffocating heat washed over her, and for a moment, she thought she was going to die.

She didn’t.

When she opened her eyes again.

Half of the palace garden was in ruins.

There was a massive crater in the ground where the clearing had been, its edges smoking and glowing with faint residual heat.

Trees lay toppled in every direction, their trunks splintered and blackened as their branches twisted into unnatural shapes.

The air was thick with smoke and ash as her nostrils filled with a smell of burned flesh, making her stomach convulse violently.

She tried to look away, but her body refused to obey any of her commands.

Then the scene finally shifted to the center of devastation, where two charred bodies lay motionless among the rubble.

One of them was a slender female with pale blue hair, now singed and grey with soot, as her elegant gown was reduced to tattered scraps that clung to her broken form.

The other had black hair matted with blood and ash. The formal coat he was wearing was gone, burned away to nothing, leaving only scorched skin and stillness of his chest that refused to rise and fall.

Big Sis Elara.

And Big Brother Mikael.

’No…’

She tried to crawl toward them as her arms shook violently. She pushed herself against the scorched earth, her fingers clawing at the dirt.

But her body refused to cooperate with her.

It felt too heavy and weak to do anything but lie there and stare at the bodies of the two people who had just been trying to protect her.

’No, no, no, no—’

She wanted to look away, close her eyes to do anything…. but she couldn’t…. couldn’t do anything except watch the smoke curled upward from their charred bodies and the embers crackled in the darkness.

Her sister was dead.

Mikael was dead.

They had died saving her, and she had done nothing except run away like a coward.

If only she hadn’t ventured out alone.

If only….

’Please…’ She didn’t know who she was begging.

Lady Sableth? The universe? Anyone who might be listening.

’P-Please, I don’t want this. I don’t want to see this. Make it stop. Make it stop, make it stop, make it stop—’

Slowly….

The world began to fade as the edges of her vision darkened, and the sounds of the aftermath–crackling flames, shifting rubble–all of them grew distant and muffled.

She sank and fell into what seemed like an endless darkness that seemed to want to swallow her whole

Then, just as the last light was about to fade completely….

She heard the familiar distant voice.

── “….lice?”

She tried to reach for that distant voice, but her body still wasn’t able to respond to her commands.

── “Alice? Hey. Can you hear me?”

The voice she heard was closer now, and there was something familiar about it that she couldn’t place her finger on.

── “Hey! Stay with me, Alice.

── “Come on, open your eyes.”

── “You’re safe now.”

Safe?

That didn’t make sense.

How could she be safe?

The garden was destroyed, her sister was dead, Mikael was dead….

But the persistent voice kept calling her back, trying to pull her back from the edge of that endless darkness.

As she felt the small stings on both of her cheeks, and something warm cradling the back of her head.

Little by little, the darkness began to loosen its hold.

It started to recede slowly as the world around her sharpened, piece by piece, until she became aware of her surroundings.

She slowly opened her golden eyes.

Mikael’s face hovered above hers, his black hair was disheveled and slightly damp with sweat, his ghostly grey eyes wide with what seemed like concern.

His lips were moving, trying to say something, but she still couldn’t make sense of it.

Was she hallucinating?

He was not burned?

Alice’s hands moved on their own as she reached up and touched his face, patting his cheeks, his shoulders, his chest–searching for the burns, the wounds.

But there was nothing.

His flesh was not charred, nor was he dead.

“You’re… you’re okay. You’re not hurt. You’re not… you’re not…”

“….I’m not hurt, Alice.” Mikael muttered in a confused voice.

“E-Elara—” The name tore from her throat in desperation as she grabbed his coat’s collar. “Where? Where is Elara? Where is my sister? Is she—”

“Alice, I’m here.”

Alice twisted in Mikael’s arms to see her sister standing nearby, her golden eyes wide with worry.

Her gown was torn below her knee, and she had no injuries.

She was alive.

’Thank Goddess…. Thank you.’

As she started sobbing loudly without maintaining any of her princess image, it shook her entire body.

The relief was too overwhelming as it left her gasping and shaking in his arms.

Elara appeared beside Mikael as he gave Alice to her.

Alice clung tightly to Elara’s slender frame, not wanting her to disappear again, weeping loudly as tears fell from her eyes.

Meanwhile, Mikael started to distract the aberration using siste again and again, buying Elara enough time to send Alice back.

“I’m here, Alice. It’s okay. You’re not hurt.” Elara muttered softly, trying to comfort her.

“I don’t… I don’t understand.” Alice’s voice cracked. “I saw… You were both… the explosion… You were…”

She couldn’t get the words out.

The memory of those charred bodies brought nausea surging up her throat, but she swallowed hard to avoid vomiting.

“I-I saw you die.” She whispered. “Both you and Mikael die…. Everything was gone… I saw it…. I saw it happen.”

“What are yo–”

Elara’s words died in her throat as she met her sister’s teary gaze, and her eyes widened.

“A-Alice, you…”

Alice’s eyes were glowing with sharp golden light.

“You have awakened your essence…..”

"Shit, why this guy!?" Of all the characters he could've transmigrated as, it had to be the worst playable character. Mikael Morwell. Zen Ashcroft, an ordinary software engineer with a boring but beloved life, finds himself hurled into his favorite game, Eclipsed Realm. A brutal dark fantasy RPG he used to play in his college years, infamous for its punishing difficulty and branching storyline with multiple playable protagonists across the shattered continent of Aetheris. The game was already hard enough with its multiple playable characters. But on the game's third anniversary, the developers decided to release a free DLC as a gift to the community. And a middle finger to anyone who claimed the game wasn't hard enough. They introduced a bonus protagonist with the tagline: [Some fates are not meant to be survived] A joke character, Mikael Morwell. The worst playable character in the entire game. A route so brutally designed that the forums turned him into a meme and most players never even bothered finishing his story. And that's not even the worst part? Zen never played his route. The DLC had dropped after he graduated, and he had already buried himself in overtime shifts and deadlines. He never got the chance to play DLC. "....Yea, I'm fucked." Now with no knowledge of Mikael's routes and no idea how to get home, Zen must survive a story he never played.
