Xie Jin pondered for a moment before whispering to Du Yu, “Are you serious? This girl is a Taishu.”
“There is absolutely no difference between a Taishu and a normal person. They did not ask to become a Taishu either. Besides, I believe there is no one in this world who hates those flawed legends more than a Taishu does.”
Qu Xi looked at Du Yu with a complex expression, her inner thoughts an absolute mystery.
“How about it?” Du Yu asked. “Do you want to give it a try?”
After listening, the girl slowly shook her head and replied, “Thank you for the kind offer, but I will have to pass. My memories are filled with nothing but filth. Carrying these memories, I cannot accomplish anything.”
“I understand how you feel,” Du Yu said. “When I first arrived here in the Underworld, I was just like you. I only wanted to hurry up and start my new life. But thinking about it carefully, even if you forget everything and start completely over, some unchangeable things will still exist. That is because you can never truly choose your own life.”
Qu Xi remained completely silent, not saying a word.
“In any case, I have given you a chance. In the boundless cycle of reincarnation, this might be the only opportunity you ever get to choose your own path.” Du Yu glanced at the girl and spoke slowly. “If you have thought it through, then make your choice. Will it be the Gates of Hell behind you, or the legends right in front of you?”
“Let me ask you something,” Qu Xi said to Du Yu. “You keep saying that you want me to work with you, but do you even know me? Do you know what I am good at, or what I specialize in?”
Qu Xi pondered for another moment before turning her head to Xie Jin and Fan Xiaoguo. “Sisters, if I choose to go with this man, does that mean I can never be reincarnated again?”
“Not at all,” Xie Jin smiled and replied. “We can simply delay your reincarnation. Why do you not go and try it out first? If you end up regretting it, it will not be too late to come back and reincarnate then.”
Qu Xi nodded. “That is exactly what I meant. Hearing this man talk so extravagantly, I want to go and take a look. If it turns out to be different from what I imagined, nobody will be able to stop me from reincarnating when the time comes.”
Du Yu smiled faintly and said, “Excellent. Get in the car.”
“Get in the car?!” Fan Xiaoguo hastily ran over and blocked the front of the van. “Du Yu, I am warning you… Sister Bai and I are very busy, do not…”
“Busy with what?” Du Yu grabbed Fan Xiaoguo and pulled her over. “I have taken over this operation. Besides, have you forgotten the Queen Mother of the West’s orders? You are supposed to cooperate with me unconditionally!”
Fan Xiaoguo gnashed her teeth in anger. Why could she never escape her fate of being a driver?
“Hehe. Xiaoguo, forget it. Let’s go.” Xie Jin was amused by Du Yu and Fan Xiaoguo. She leaned down gracefully, got into the car, and then turned back to pull Qu Xi up.
Traveling alongside Xie Jin and Fan Xiaoguo once again, Du Yu could not help but feel a wave of emotion.
He then looked at Qu Xi beside him, and a sudden thought popped into his head. ‘If the Legend Management Bureau only recruited these wrongfully deceased Taishus, wouldn’t that greatly improve our work efficiency?’
However, finding wrongfully deceased Taishus was easier said than done. Even the Book of Life and Death did not record the death states of a Taishu. Such opportunities could only be stumbled upon by pure luck, not actively sought out.
It did not take long before the group caught sight of Mount Bugui in the distance.
“Little sister, let me give you a heads-up,” Du Yu said. “Although the Legend Management Bureau looks completely dilapidated on the outside, its internal structure is actually quite nice. At first, I was also startled by its rundown exterior.”
Qu Xi gave a slight nod, still appearing somewhat guarded.
After circling around Mount Bugui once, Fan Xiaoguo turned the van around and slowly descended. The group slid open the doors and stepped out one by one.
“Come on, take a look at our rundown Legend Management… Holy crap!”
Before Du Yu could even finish his sentence, he let out a loud shout.
Standing right before him was a massive structure constructed entirely from white marble. It spanned hundreds of meters from east to west. In the center stood high, pure-white walls and a colossal gatehouse. Exquisite carvings adorned the walls of the gatehouse, flanked by covered corridors on both sides. A straight passageway ran right through the middle, and looking closely, one could spot a pristine white screen standing on the inside. Suspended high above the courtyard’s gatehouse was a gleaming, golden plaque bearing five large characters—Legend Management Bureau.
“You said… it looked dilapidated on the outside…” Qu Xi noted with visible confusion. “I don’t know how high the architectural standards of you Underworld people are, but this place looks more luxurious than any palace in a television drama.”
Xie Jin and Fan Xiaoguo also let out gasps of amazement. They had visited the Legend Management Bureau before, and back then, they had been so frightened by the ruined scene outside the door that they hadn’t even dared to enter. But how did this Legend Management Bureau suddenly look like the High Firmament Hall?
“No, I didn’t expect this either,” Du Yu muttered to himself. “We agreed on a reconstruction, nobody said anything about an expansion. Besides, it’s only been an hour or two… How could I have known…”
“Ah!” A sudden cry of alarm rang out from the sky above. “Oh no, oh no! The Operator seems to have returned!”
Before the group could even look up, they heard a massive crash as a towering, brawny man landed heavily on the ground. Upon his broad shoulders rested a boulder the size of a small mountain. The moment he set the rock down, the earth trembled violently. He then bellowed toward the inside of the Legend Management Bureau, “Second Brother! Stop what you are doing, the Operator is back!”
A flurry of frantic noises echoed from inside the building, and moments later, an identical brawny man squeezed his way out. He carried a gigantic white marble pillar on his shoulder, its sheer size completely disproportionate to his own massive frame.
“Ah?!” The second man reacted as if he had just seen a ghost upon spotting Du Yu. He frantically dashed out of the building and, with a swift wave of his arm, hurled the colossal white marble pillar far away into the distance. The pillar, which looked to weigh several tons, flew from his grasp as effortlessly as a paper airplane.
“The Operator is back?! We didn’t continue the construction… This should count as finishing the work right before the Operator returned…”
Du Yu offered a wry smile, wondering just how severe of a psychological shadow the Queen Mother of the West had cast upon these two sons of Kua’e.
“You two immortal brothers… Do not worry about the time limit. If there is more to do, just keep doing it. I will put in a good word for you in front of the Queen Mother of the West.”
Hearing this, the two men stood frozen in place, seemingly unable to believe their ears, utterly afraid to move a muscle.
“Really?”
“Really…” Du Yu let out a dry laugh. “You two are putting your hearts and souls into working for our Legend Management Bureau. Why would I ever make things difficult for you?”
Upon hearing this assurance, the duo finally breathed a sigh of relief. The first brawny man turned his head and spoke to the other, “Second Brother, since Lord Operator is being so accommodating, we must put in even more effort! Hurry up and retrieve that white marble pillar you just threw away.”
“Right away, Big Brother.”
The second brother launched off the ground like a rocket, flying directly toward the spot where he had hurled the pillar.
“Immortal brother, can we head inside to take a look now?” Du Yu asked the eldest son of Kua’e.
“Of course you can!” the older brother nodded enthusiastically. “If there is anything that needs improving, please do not hesitate to say so.”
Du Yu led the group slowly into the Legend Management Bureau. Standing all by herself right in the middle of the courtyard was a lone young woman.
“Xiao Qi!” Du Yu called out, giving her a huge fright.
“Ah! Du Yu! You’re back?!” she shrieked. “Quick, look at what is going on here! These two huge guys started building a house right on the Legend Management Bureau’s property without saying a word. I couldn’t stop them at all!”
“Haha!” Du Yu chuckled, thoroughly amused by Xiao Qi. “Knowing you, you probably didn’t even dare to try stopping them. Relax, they are on our side. The Queen Mother of the West sent them over to rebuild the Legend Management Bureau.”
“Rebuild the Legend Management Bureau?!” Xiao Qi gasped in astonishment. “Are you saying this entire place is the Legend Management Bureau from now on?”
“Yes. They even hung up a plaque outside the front gate. Did you not see it?”
“It is way too out in the open by the main gate. It wouldn’t be easy to run away, so I haven’t dared to step outside.”
“Pfft, this little sister is so adorable.” Xie Jin was also tickled. “She acts just like a frightened cat.”
“A cat?” Du Yu paused for a moment. “Now that you mention it, she really is. She is incredibly timid. Every time I call out to her from behind, it startles her.”
Xiao Qi waved her hands nervously. “Stop talking about cats… Du Yu, who are these older sisters?”
Du Yu introduced them, “You should have met these two before. This is Xie Jin from the White Guard family, and this is Fan Xiaoguo from the Black Guard family. As for the girl behind them, she is a Taishu. I intend to recruit her as a Support Assistant for the Legend Management Bureau.”
“Oh.” Xiao Qi couldn’t care less whether she was a Taishu or not. She responded half-heartedly, “What are we going to do next?”
Du Yu pondered for a moment before turning to Xie Jin and Fan Xiaoguo. “Sisters, your Black and White families both possess immense influence. Could you do me a favor?”
“No!” Fan Xiaoguo snapped crossly.
“Then could you do the Queen Mother of the West a favor?” Du Yu asked.
“Uh…” Fan Xiaoguo instantly hesitated. “G-Go ahead and say it…”
Du Yu chuckled inwardly. ‘The Queen Mother of the West’s name really is a great bargaining chip.’ He wondered what kind of expressions they would make if he told them that the Queen Mother of the West was now the Director of the Legend Management Bureau.
“The Legend Management Bureau needs to recruit a batch of talented individuals in a very short amount of time. Right now, our numbers are far too low, so I need to hold a public recruitment drive. Using my own influence definitely will not be enough, but your Black and White families have a massive number of personnel. You should be the most suited for this job.”
“A public recruitment drive…” Xie Jin pondered for a second before asking, “What are the requirements?”
“From Underworld Messengers and Judges all the way down to wandering ghosts and wild spirits, anyone is welcome to try. Of course, anyone with sinister intentions will be rejected.”
“Alright, I understand,” Xie Jin nodded. “I will head back and inform my family members immediately.”
“By the way,” Du Yu added, “if you manage to find any Taishus, you must absolutely let me meet them.”
The two women nodded before walking out the door to take action.
Du Yu then took Xiao Qi and Qu Xi on a tour around the new Legend Management Bureau. The internal layout was no different from before, except it had been proportionally scaled up more than tenfold. The massive main hall was meant for monitoring all the legend-related operations, and separate, individual offices and dormitories had been built for every single staff member.
“Very good…” Du Yu nodded in deep satisfaction. “We have scored another point in sheer grandeur.”
