Legend Management Bureau Chapter 127

Shrouded in conspiracy[ … words ]

“Is that woman Chada?”

Du Yu stared slightly blankly. He recalled the first time he met Chada; she had been wearing a tight black striped suit paired with a black cashmere trench coat, lacking any feminine features whatsoever. Yet, the woman in the phone booth looked just like a happy mother. Her style of dress reminded Du Yu of an old idiom—the demure girl next door.

The woman chatted on the phone for quite a while, turned her head to check on her daughter outside the booth, and then turned back to continue her conversation.

With just that single backward glance, Du Yu confirmed her identity.

‘It really is Chada… but what should I do now?’

Du Yu watched Chada’s daughter for a moment, but suddenly, someone blocked his view.

“Huh?” Du Yu was taken aback. A burly man with a full beard stood before him, glaring at Du Yu with suspicion.

“Sir, I noticed you’ve been staring at that little girl. Is there a problem?” the burly man asked coldly.

“Me?” Du Yu instantly understood the situation. “No, you might have misunderstood. I’m just waiting for that woman to finish her call so I can use the phone booth…”

Du Yu mused that 1993 London felt far better than 1888. Good Samaritans were everywhere; it was just a shame that he seemed to be treated as the bad guy.

Du Yu thought to himself that it made sense. The ‘disaster’ hadn’t happened yet. Was he supposed to just walk over and snatch the child away? That would make him look even more like a kidnapper.

“Yingning, Yingning!” Du Yu called out.

“What is it?” Yingning sounded completely drained.

“Why do you sound so out of it?” Du Yu was a bit puzzled. Yingning was usually incredibly bossy with him, so why was she acting so sluggish today?

“You’re asking me…” Yingning sighed softly. “You have a Translation Talisman, but I don’t… Everyone is just babbling, and I can’t understand a thing about what’s going on. I’m getting sleepy…”

“Oh! Hahaha!” Du Yu was amused by Yingning. “I forgot that you couldn’t understand them. Come here, let me explain it to you.”

In a few short sentences, Du Yu explained the current situation to Yingning and casually asked for her thoughts.

“That little girl is indeed very lovable,” Yingning replied. “If you want to save her, I can help. It’s just… it’s broad daylight right now. Will a ‘dead drunk’ driver really drive past?”

“Probably.” Du Yu pondered for a moment. “She should have no reason to lie to me about this.”

“Understood then,” Yingning said faintly. “Just maintain your current distance. It’s close enough for me to fly over and save that little girl.”

Du Yu gave a slight nod. He was currently about one to two hundred meters away from Chada’s phone booth—neither too far nor too close. If Yingning took action, Du Yu was confident they could save the little girl without anyone noticing.

He walked over to a nearby bench and sat down. An expired newspaper had been left on the seat.

To avoid arousing any suspicion, Du Yu picked up the newspaper and pretended to read. After staring at it for a while, he realized he couldn’t read a single word and could only look at the pictures.

Before long, a black sedan parked right in front of Du Yu.

Inside the car were two pale-faced men with impeccably combed blond hair. The man driving looked relatively young, while the man in the passenger seat appeared to be middle-aged. These two gave Du Yu a very eerie feeling, as if they weren’t even living breathing humans.

The middle-aged man in the passenger seat was holding a clunky brick phone, chatting away on a call. After parking the car securely, the younger man stepped out and walked into the convenience store behind Du Yu.

“Yes, yes, I know. You’ve worked very hard, Chada,” the middle-aged man on the phone said, gazing off into the distance toward the phone booth. “But the company is in a slump right now, and profits have been shrinking. Yes, I know everything you’re telling me.”

Du Yu froze and hurriedly called out, “Sister Qianqiu!”

“What’s wrong?”

“Does our screen have a video recording function? Hurry and record this. I feel like something fishy is going on.”

“Video recording?” Dong Qianqiu paused in surprise before pulling out her own cell phone. “I can just record it with my phone, right?”

“Yes, that works too!”

The pale-faced man scratched his nose and casually continued, “Chada, I understand you. Raising a child certainly costs a lot of money, but the Controllers basically all have children to feed. I know, Chada, please don’t cry. I’m also very sorry about what happened to your husband.”

Du Yu furrowed his brows tightly, an ominous premonition welling up in his heart.

A short while later, the young man who had entered the convenience store behind him walked back out, clutching a freshly bought bottle of brandy. He glanced left and right before walking straight toward the bearded, burly man standing not far from Du Yu.

This man was none other than the Good Samaritan who had been keeping a close eye on Du Yu.

The pale-faced young man simply waved his hand in front of the burly man. Without even a chance to speak, the burly man lost consciousness and slumped completely limp.

“Holy crap?!” Du Yu hadn’t expected these people to actually knock someone out in broad daylight.

The pale young man propped up the unconscious man, popped open the brandy, pried open his mouth, and poured the entire bottle down his throat. As he did all this, he was merely three to five meters away from Du Yu.

Only after emptying the bottle of liquor did he slowly raise his head and say to Du Yu, “Asian punk, do you want to die? Avert your eyes.”

“Huh?!” Du Yu was speechless. ‘Just how much does this guy look down on me?’

But Du Yu rolled his eyes slightly and decided he couldn’t afford to get tangled up here. So, he retracted his gaze, shifted over a little, and said, “Sorry to bother you, sir. I didn’t see anything.”

Although Du Yu looked away, his attention remained squarely on the middle-aged man on the phone in the car. The man’s expression was utterly contemptuous, but no flaws could be found in his tone of voice.

“I deeply sympathize with you, Chada, but you know that if I give you this money, I won’t be able to justify it to the other Controllers.” The man on the phone picked his nose, shot a glance at the young man who was busy pouring liquor, and continued, “I know you won’t tell anyone, but the finance department won’t lie, will they? Besides, your husband’s death wasn’t entirely our responsibility.”

Seeing that the pale man seemed to have finished up, he slowly stepped out of the car, stood on the curb, and looked toward Chada’s phone booth again. “Chada, don’t rush to hang up. If you have any other sufficient reasons, tell me again, and I will take them into consideration. You know you’re an excellent employee, and I don’t want to lose you.”

As he spoke, he impatiently waved his hand at the pale man. Catching his meaning, the pale man helped the dead-drunk burly man into the driver’s seat.

“I get it now,” Du Yu declared coldly. “What a ruthless boss. They’re using this despicable trick to ensure Chada can never leave the Time Company.”

The pale young man waved his hand in front of the blackout-drunk man, whose eyes instantly shot open and gripped the steering wheel.

“Yingning, are you still there?!” Du Yu asked urgently.

“I’m here… I just didn’t understand what they were talking about…”

“I’ll tell you later, but get ready to save her right now! If possible, save this driver too. He’s a good person and shouldn’t die here.”

“Alright, I’ll try my best.”

The moment her voice faded, the burly man in the car slammed on the gas pedal. From one to two hundred meters away, the vehicle surged violently toward the little girl on the street.

Yingning darted out without a trace and stuck herself to the undercarriage of the car. It all happened in a flash. Just as the car was less than ten meters from the little girl, Yingning exerted her strength. The entire car suddenly launched into the air, flying right over the little girl’s head! With numerous ordinary mortals witnessing the spectacle, the car soared into the sky, did a lap in the air, and then landed smoothly back on the ground.

A female author passing by happened to catch sight of this scene. Speechless with shock, she immediately pulled out her trusty notebook and jotted down the flying car. She had a strong feeling that this plot point could be put to good use in one of her future books.

A crowd of onlookers gradually gathered, their eyes entirely captivated by the vehicle. They were intensely curious about exactly who was driving this flying car.

“There’s an expert here,” the pale young man said slowly.

The middle-aged man nodded and turned to look back at Du Yu.

Du Yu froze. ‘Am I about to be discovered?’

“Sir, did you see that just now? A flying car!” Du Yu played completely dumb.

The middle-aged man didn’t speak right away. With a gloomy expression, he slowly walked toward Du Yu and demanded, “Do you have any idea how severe the consequences of your actions are?”

“I don’t understand, what did I do? Are you guys salesmen? I don’t have any money.”

Unfortunately, without Zhongli Chun around to protect him right now, Du Yu had no choice but to be exceedingly polite. If it were before, he would have started acting cocky ages ago.

“It doesn’t matter. You just need to tell me who your employer is. After causing such a massive disturbance, we need to know whose mess we’re cleaning up.”

“We don’t generally hand our messes over for others to clean up. You just focus on cleaning up your own,” Du Yu quipped back.

Hearing this, the middle-aged man furrowed his brows slightly. “Sir, are you familiar with the ‘Grandfather Paradox’?”

“Oh, never heard of it, and I’m not buying. Thanks.”

Du Yu gave the middle-aged man one last glance and slowly backed away into the crowd. The two men did not give chase.

He bobbed and weaved through the throng of people, searching for Chada’s silhouette. He felt a slight tremble at his waist—Yingning had returned as well.

Chada was also quite frantic at the moment. Not knowing why a crowd had suddenly formed, she was desperately searching for her daughter.

A chubby little girl was tumbling unsteadily as people bumped into her. Just as she was about to be knocked over, Du Yu and Chada simultaneously reached out and caught her.

“Oh?”

Du Yu and Chada paused in surprise at the exact same time.

Chada reacted half a second later. Her right hand pulled a rapier out of thin air and thrust it straight at Du Yu’s face.

Her sword was incredibly fast, leaving Du Yu no time to react. Thankfully, Yingning suddenly flew out and deflected the path of her blade.

“Chada, hold on! I have something to tell you!”

“Sir, you touched my daughter before speaking. I won’t believe a single word you say!”
