Legend Management Bureau Chapter 133
Guarding the west[ … words ]
[ … words ]
White Impermanence shook his head helplessly and said, “You call yourselves immortals? What, have your brains stopped working?”
After saying that, he immediately turned to the Queen Mother of the West and added, “Of course, I wasn’t talking about you.”
The Queen Mother of the West slowly nodded.
“A living person died, what is there to cry about? This is the Underworld after all!” White Impermanence said, then turned to Black Impermanence. “Old Eighth, this woman has killed countless people, so she’s your job. Even though we could just leave her alone and wait for her to show up on her own, you might as well just hook her out now.”
Fan Wujiu gave a slight nod. With a wave of his hand, his casual clothes transformed into his official uniform. A soul-hooking chain appeared in his grasp, and a tall official’s hat materialized on his head, bearing four large characters: “Peace Under Heaven”.
He walked to Cedda’s side and reached out to touch her forehead.
“I am Black Impermanence, tasked with capturing the souls of the wicked across the world. The cycle of karma has its fixed destiny; the sins of murder and evil must be repaid after death. Should you resist, I shall enforce peace under heaven. I now command you to reveal yourself at once.”
After a moment, Cedda’s body showed no reaction. Black Impermanence couldn’t help but frown and said, “It seems this is your job.”
“Eh?” Xie Bi’an was taken aback. “It’s actually my job?!”
“I really hate wearing this outfit. It’s so ugly,” Xie Bi’an muttered, shaking his head helplessly. He then reached out his pale hand and placed it on Cedda’s forehead.
“I am White Impermanence, tasked with inviting the souls of the kindhearted across the world. Accumulate good deeds to build virtue, and be reborn into eternal bliss; the rewards of kindness and blessings shall be reaped after death. Since we have met, I guarantee you fortune upon meeting. I invite your esteemed self to reveal yourself at once.”
As soon as his words fell, Cedda’s body glowed with a soft white light. Drawn by White Impermanence, another Cedda slowly sat up and opened her eyes.
She slowly stood up and stepped onto the ground, her face full of confusion.
“What…” Cedda stared blankly at the crowd. “Ladies and gentlemen… what happened?”
“Cedda?!” Du Yu laughed through his tears. “I completely forgot that you would become a soul after you died!”
“Mr. Du?” Cedda looked at Du Yu in panic. “You’re here? … Why can’t I understand what you’re saying…”
“You don’t understand? I mean… even though you died, you’ve turned into a spirit…”
Cedda looked at Du Yu in confusion and asked, “Mr. Du, have you been speaking Chinese this whole time?”
“Huh?” Du Yu was stunned. “I never spoke English to begin with…”
“Sir… could you please speak something I can understand?”
“No, why can’t you understand me…”
“Du Yu, you really are a bit dense. Someone, hurry up and give her a new translation talisman,” the Queen Mother of the West said, shaking her head in exasperation. She then muttered under her breath, “I nearly let her make me cry just now. How unseemly.”
A fairy stepped forward and slipped a translation talisman into Cedda’s pocket. Only then did she finally understand what Du Yu was saying.
“Oh! So that’s it! I almost forgot about this magical little piece of paper!” Cedda smiled at everyone, then asked, “What exactly happened to me?”
Du Yu finally realized he had been talking to a brick wall this entire time.
“People have souls after they die, and you are currently a soul,” White Impermanence said calmly. “I just didn’t expect you to be categorized as a good person…”
“So I really am dead?” Cedda let out a slow sigh. “It turns out people really do have souls…”
“But… maybe this is for the best…” Du Yu said. “You’re in the Underworld of China now. Those people can never hurt you again.”
Cedda pondered for a moment before asking, “Since I’m dead, does that mean I can finally see Cassie, who is also a soul?”
The group fell into a brief silence before White Impermanence spoke up. “I’m afraid not. Setting aside whether her soul would even come to China, even if you could return to England, theoretically speaking, your daughter’s soul would have reincarnated long ago. It’s been twenty or thirty years; she couldn’t possibly wait that long. Furthermore, in your current state, the moment you return to England, you’ll be targeted by those people again.”
“Is that so…” Cedda stared blankly. “Will I never be able to see Cassie after all…”
“Actually… there might be a way…” Du Yu said, hesitating for a moment.
“Don’t lie to me, sir.” Cedda shook her head. “I can’t possibly exist in the same time and space as myself. Cassie is always with the ‘past me’, so…”
“No, there really is a way.” Du Yu sounded much more certain now. “I just don’t know if you’ll be willing to do it.”
“Mr. Du, if such a method truly exists, I am willing to try it no matter what.”
Du Yu nodded, then warned her, “I need to tell you upfront. If you choose this path, you will have to abandon your current life, and you can never go back.”
“Mr. Du, I am already dead.” Cedda offered a bitter smile. “Could my outcome possibly get any worse than this?”
Du Yu remained silent for a moment before pulling the Records of the Eight Directions of Ghosts from his pocket.
“Cedda, become a part of me,” Du Yu said solemnly. “From now on, you will be a spirit bound to me. Unless your soul is completely shattered, you will never have your freedom again. Are you willing?”
Cedda froze. “Sir, if I become a part of you… will I be able to see Cassie?”
“Yes. You will use my eyes to see her, and my body to embrace her,” Du Yu promised. “From this day forward, we will be one and the same.”
The immortals stared in shock at the Records of the Eight Directions of Ghosts. Legend had it that this was the divine technique of Lady Houtu. Why was it in Du Yu’s possession right now?
Moreover, the demand Du Yu made sounded incredibly unreasonable. Anyone would normally need to consider it very carefully before daring to agree.
“Okay!” Cedda nodded without a single ounce of hesitation. “I am willing.”
Du Yu smiled warmly and said, “Sign your name, and I will take you to see Cassie right away.”
Under the watchful eyes of the immortals, Cedda signed her name in the “West” section of the “Eight Directions” — “Cedda Swann”.
The moment she put down the pen, her entire figure turned into a wisp of light smoke and slowly drifted into the Records of the Eight Directions of Ghosts.
Du Yu slowly opened his eyes, his aura completely shifted. He put away the record book, stood up, and walked to the side. Raising his hand, he drew a circle in the air, opening a portal. On the other side of the gateway lay the bustling streets of London.
“Everyone, I’ll be right back. Hurry up and prepare for the next legend. Let’s go with Athena, Goddess of War.”
With that, Du Yu turned and stepped into the portal, leaving the group of immortals staring at each other in bewilderment.
“What did Senior Du Yu just do…” Shiranui Asuka asked, her eyes wide. “Why does it feel like he has Senior Cedda’s aura on him?”
It was naturally the first time any of the immortals had witnessed the sheer wonder of the Records of the Eight Directions of Ghosts, so no one knew how to answer.
“Swoosh!”
Accompanied by the sound of rushing wind, Zhan Qisheng appeared.
He seemed to have miscalculated his time travel, returning a little later than Du Yu.
“Argh!” Zhan Qisheng collapsed to his knees the moment he landed, a bizarre black mist rippling across his face.
“Zhan Qisheng!” Dong Qianqiu rushed over to check on his condition. She found that the wound Cavendish had slashed open earlier had turned completely black and was emitting a purple smoke.
“Pocky Zhang, what’s wrong with you?” Xiao Qi also sprinted over to inspect his wound. “What happened? You definitely weren’t hurt this badly before.”
“I don’t know…” Zhan Qisheng gritted his teeth and shook his head. “It feels like… some kind of sinister poison.”
“Daode Tianzun, please come take a look!” Dong Qianqiu called out.
Taishang Laojun slowly walked over. Upon seeing Zhan Qisheng’s condition, he immediately sensed something was wrong and reached out to grasp the man’s wrist.
“It’s not poison. He has been tainted by the blood of a Western demon,” Taishang Laojun said after checking his pulse for a moment, his face instantly showing deep concern. “This is quite troublesome. May I ask if Hua Tuo, Bian Que, Li Shizhen, and Zhang Zhongjing are currently in the Underworld?”
“They are!”
“Find them immediately. Tell them to bring their medical kits and fetch the ingredients according to my prescription.” He materialized a pen and paper out of thin air and swiftly jotted down a few lines.
Receiving the order, six of the Eight Underworld Emissaries immediately flew off. Only Black and White Impermanence remained standing where they were.
“What’s wrong, Seventh Lord and Eighth Lord?” Dong Qianqiu asked.
She noticed that Fan Wujiu looked like he wanted to say something. He kept staring intently at the severely poisoned Zhan Qisheng, his fists clenched slightly in apparent anger.
“Oh, Assistant Dong. Old Eighth isn’t leaving, so I can’t leave either,” White Impermanence chuckled, glancing at his partner. “I’m afraid that if I leave, he’ll turn around and kill Zhan Qisheng.”
“Hmph,” Fan Wujiu scoffed coldly. “Personal grudges can wait. I still know how to prioritize.”
With that, he cast one last frigid glare at Zhan Qisheng, turned, and strode away. White Impermanence followed closely behind.
Dong Qianqiu was a little bewildered. ‘Black Impermanence and Zhan Qisheng actually have a personal grudge?’
…
On the bustling streets of London, in an unknown year.
Moving as comfortably as if he were heading home, Du Yu navigated the familiar streets. Before long, he walked straight up to the front door of a house and gently knocked.
The person who opened the door was a young Cedda. She looked at Du Yu with a hint of confusion before smiling and asking, “Hello, who are you looking for?”
Du Yu smiled back at her and replied, “Code: Elephant, Iris, Door Lock.”
The young Cedda was stunned for a moment before stepping aside to let Du Yu in. What he had just spoken was today’s secret password, recited without a moment’s hesitation and perfectly accurate word for word. She was the only one who knew this code.
Inside the house, a chubby little girl was playing with building blocks. Every time she stacked them up, she would knock them all down, letting out a cute cascade of giggles. Hearing someone approach, she looked up and stared at Du Yu with innocent, blank eyes.
The lips of the man standing before her trembled slightly. Tears welled up and spilled from his eyes as he broke down sobbing, unable to utter a single word.
Du Yu completely surrendered control of his body to Cedda. This was what they had agreed upon.
He slowly crouched down and gently wrapped his arms around Cassie. For this single embrace, Cedda had sacrificed everything she had.
For so many years, Cedda hadn’t even been able to catch a glimpse of Cassie. She could hardly believe this was real.
The setting sun spilled into the room, bathing the space in the colors of deep yearning. On this warm and quiet afternoon, Cedda held Cassie in her arms.
