Unlike her, Adrian had watched the duel closely and knew all too well what had just happened. But that didn’t mean that he understood everything.

With the end of that match, the rankings of the Phase Three applicants were set. Evangeline was in fourth place, Saria Velcyra Mythrien occupied third place, the second place went to the commoner boy Xion, and Adrian himself occupied the first place.

These rankings had absolutely no tangible benefit. They were simply there to create competition amongst the academy cadets.

The highlight of the Phase Two duels was the duel between Ravian and the Keldravon heir. Adrian hadn’t been there to watch, but according to Evangeline, the fight was intense, and anyone could’ve won. But in the end, Ravian lost and ended up in second place.

By the time the Phase One ranking duels started, they had all left. There were too many commoners, and their duels would take quite a while to end. None of them had the patience to sit there for so long.

The academy city was bathed in the orange glow of the setting sun as the three of them walked side by side.

Evangeline looked at the sky and muttered.

“We’re really academy cadets now…”

“Indeed, we really are. It was quite a fun experience.” He turned to the two of them. “Unlike you two, I have attended several noble gatherings and banquets. But for some reason, they weren’t really fun. There were others my age there too, but I just somehow couldn’t connect with them. But for some reason, that’s not the case when I am with you two. I am lucky to have you both as friends.”

Evangeline tilted her head.

“Wait, I’m your friend?”

“Oh.” Ravian’s face turned awkward. “Was I being presumptuous? Forgive me, then—”

“No! No! No!” Evangeline hurriedly shook her head. “That’s not what I meant! I am happy that you think of me as a friend. It’s just that…”

She trailed off and looked down at the road as she continued.

“I want to make friends in the academy, but I don’t know how to go about it. I just don’t understand how that works. Ravian, at what point did I start being your friend, and how did you know?”

Ravian opened his mouth to answer, but… no words came out.

His expression seemed to say: ’How do I answer that?’

Adrian sighed.

In the end, Ravian sighed and looked at Evangeline as he answered in a gentle tone.

“I think that there isn’t some fixed method for making friends. It’s more of a feeling. When you interact with someone enough, you’ll feel that the two of you are now friends.”

“Is that so…? I will try, I guess.”
