The Broken Halo Chapter 148

Chapter 148: Crumbled Beneath Their Feet

The female Initiate was stunned and baffled to the core the moment she found her feet raised above the ground.

One moment, she was focusing on dodging as many poisonous darts as possible, but now, she was helplessly above the ground.

’What’s going on?’

A second after this question flashed in her mind, her mind finally registered what was happening, and the first thing she noticed was that she was moving.

How?

She had no idea at first.

But when she saw the darts coming at her, her pupils constricted, and the next thing she knew, she was placed in the path of the darts.

“Ouch!”

Having nearly a dozen darts pierce one’s body was painful, especially if one was not used to pain.

The darts pierced her arms, breasts, shoulders, and stomach.

Some struck her face, but luckily for her, her mask protected her.

’Somebody is using me as a shield!’

The female Initiate suddenly realized in horror what was happening, and she screamed in anger and fear.

“Drop me this instant! Who are you?! Do you want to die?!”

Simon remained silent and did not reply her in the slightest. His gaze was cold and calculating as he observed what was happening in front of him and around him.

He could see how some Initiates who were quick to react were moving and dodging the darts.

There was no Initiate that was not struck or did not have a dart struck on their body. There were just too many, and the bigger problem was that they had a very narrow space.

The ledge they were running on was narrow and it heavily restricted their movements.

Some took a step too much or faltered as they dodged a dart, and they fell.

Everything was chaotic.

Screams could be heard from the Initiates who fell and also from the Initiates who were attempting to dodge the darts.

There were Initiates who were pushed to the side by other Initiates because of the narrow space, they fell too.

Some even tried to attack one another while screaming to get out of the way, and Simon saw all of this with a calm expression.

A minute had gone by from the moment he used the female Initiate as a shield, and Simon could no longer hear her screams and curses.

The poison from over a dozen darts had knocked her out cold, but Simon kept on using her as a shield as he ran on the narrow ledge.

Some Initiates saw what Simon did and were inspired. Their eyes flashed with a dangerous light, and some attempted to use their classmates as shields.

But unlike the unlucky female Initiate in Simon’s hands, many were now aware and they fought back once anybody tried to use them as a shield.

Some were successful in doing this, but some were not.

Not everybody had the physical strength to easily overpower one of their classmates.

“Move you damned slave!”

A shout of fury boomed from behind Simon, and he glanced behind him with a slight frown.

He saw a male Initiate running toward him with the skull mask of a bear.

Compared to his size and the size of the average Initiates, he was tall and huge, and his goal was to ram into Simon with visible vicious intent.

Simon’s eyes flashed, and he slid to a stop and in a calm fluid movement, he swung his left foot at the Initiate’s face.

His feet glowed with an emerald-orange colour, and his feet connected with the demon’s face.

Bang!

Despite the obvious strength and constitution the Initiate possessed because of his physique, he could not be compared to Simon who had devoured the corpse of Pellin who was an Archfiend and Thorgan who was a Supreme Fiend with a Royal Bloodline.

The Initiate was just a Minor Fiend, and he could not contend with Simon in terms of strength and speed.

And Simon made it worse by enhancing his legs with his demonic energy.

The moment his feet connected with the temple of the Initiate’s head, his head slammed into the wall to his right and he went unconscious immediately.

Bam!

He fell to the ground, but because of his size, he did not fall to the depths of the clan.

However, because of his size, he caused a domino effect that caused the Initiates who were too close to him to trip, stumble, and fall.

Some fell to the ground, some fell to the side and fell to the depths of the clan, their screams echoing throughout the clan as they fell.

At least seven Initiates fell and suffered the domino effect, and those who were lucky enough not to fall beyond the ledge, they rained curses on Simon who ran with an indifferent expression.

A single action of Simon caused many Initiates to be delayed.

But Simon definitely did not give two flying fucks.

He kept on running while calculating the distance and how much time they had left.

He and the others in front of him turned to the right and descended down a set of stairs, then they turned to the left and began running across one of the bridges that led to another stair that descended into the depths of the clan.

’At this pace, I would barely make it, and that’s not good enough. I have to stand out and become extremely valuable to the clan as an Initiate. If I’m just average or above average, I would just be seen as a valuable slave.’

’But if I show that I’m indispensable, it would shift the odds in my favour… Let’s increase the pace shall we.’

Simon’s eyes flashed with a sharp light, and he was about to increase his speed and overtake those who were in front of him. However, a bolt of realization suddenly struck him and he was taken aback and was confused.

He looked around with a deep frown.

’Wait. This bridge is not part of the map that leads to the academy. It’s not even part of the map at all. Where did-’

Simon’s thoughts were cut short as the bridge suddenly crumbled beneath his feet and the feet of the other Initiates.

’Damn it!’

‘How cliché. I’ve read countless novels where the Hero is betrayed by their companions… but was I wrong to trust those who fought beside me for nearly six decades?’ ----- Betrayal. A word many live in fear of. A word some never expect… until it happens. A word that completely shatters one’s view of life. Just like any other heroic tale, Simon was the Hero of Earth, the one who defeated the Demon King and was about to end the war between races with his companions. Yet, in the end, he was betrayed by his own companions for reasons he never understood. Instead of finding death, Simon found rebirth. To his horror, he reincarnated as the very race he had devoted his entire life to exterminating… a race he despised, feared, and was disgusted by. Reborn as a demon infant within one of the most impoverished demon tribes, Simon found himself at the very bottom of a world he once sought to destroy. Fortunately, he was not entirely abandoned. His unique Seven Star Blessing, bestowed by his patron God, followed him through reincarnation. Armed with this Blessing and the Demonic Magic of his new race, Simon now harbors an ambition greater than ever before… to rise higher than he ever did as the Hero of Earth. To become a God. But the path forward is far from simple. Betrayals from those he would never expect. Endless trials and tribulations. And the lingering question of identity… Should he cling to his past as a human hero, or embrace his nature as a demon to survive? Can Simon abandon his hatred and live among demons? Will he erase his past entirely and fully embrace his demonic nature? Will his thirst for revenge drag him deeper into darkness… Or will he rise above it? In the end… Will he be devoured… or will he devour all?
