The Broken Halo Chapter 32

Chapter 32: Another Betrayal

While Simon and a Velari were conversing and ’battling’, Zaglur was facing a predicament which he never expected.

Just like Simon, he had been ambushed. But unlike Simon, he was not able to dodge the attack.

No.

The attacks.

The main reason Simon was alive and was able to dodge the attacks of the Velari was because the Velari was not even using up to a quarter of his power.

The Velari was an Archfiend, and there was no way Simon could dodge the attacks of an Archfiend even with his absurdly fast reflexes.

Meanwhile, Zaglur was not so lucky.

Although Simon was not certain, the Velaris knew Zaglur’s true power level, and they did not treat him lightly in the slightest.

When they attacked, they attacked with the intent to kill, and they did not dare to underestimate him.

Zaglur was a Greater Demon, two levels below a Demon King.

As for the three Velaris that attacked Zaglur, all three were also Greater Demons.

It was no wonder Zaglur’s mercenary group died at the hands of four demons.

However, none of this information bothered Zaglur.

What truly bothered Zaglur was…

“Why? Why? Why the fuck are you guys betraying me?! I thought we had a deal?!”

No longer did Zaglur have his ever-present smile.

On his face was an expression of pure and utter fury as he looked at the three Velaris.

“Is the Shadowgrave Clan planning on ending the partnership between the Daegrins and the Velaris?”

The Velaris remained silent, then the Velari in the middle spoke.

“Where is the Devourer’s blood essence?”

Zaglur’s teeth gnashed in anger and fury the moment he heard this. He clenched his fists tightly to the point that veins appeared on his arms and his neck.

He was so furious. So furious to the point that he wanted to kill everything.

“Where is the Devourer’s blood essence? Where is the Devourer’s blood essence?! I was obviously going to give it to you as per our agreement, you stupid bastards! There was no need for you to do this!”

“You know how we Daegrins are! Wealth over power! I don’t give a shit about the Devourer’s blood essence! I would have given it to you and I would have gotten paid! Fucking simple!”

Zaglur huffed with blood-red eyes and a dense, billowing killing intent that could drown an entire football stadium.

The Velaris remained silent and just stared at him, then the one in the middle spoke again.

“Where is the Devourer’s blood essence?”

Zaglur chuckled with a wide smile. “Can you fucking believe these pieces of shit. Fine.”

Ptui

Zaglur spat out blood to the side, then he looked at the three Velaris.

“Will you let me live if I tell you where it is?”

“Not if you tell us where it is, but if you give it to us.” The Velari to the right spoke, and Zaglur scoffed.

“And what about my payment? Our agreement? Huh? I spent a lot just to get the damned blood essence, and now… Guess fucking what. I’m fucking BROKE!”

“All thanks to you bitches!”

The Velaris remained silent, and Zaglur shook his head with a chuckle of disbelief, anger, and madness.

“Sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers of bitches. You guys are the worst of the worst.”

“Where is the Devourer’s blood essence?” The Velari on the left asked, and Zaglur smiled widely.

His smile was one of madness and pure rage.

“In my fucking asshole, fools!”

“You think I’m going to tell you? If I tell you, you’re going to kill me because you know that I won’t let this slide after everything you’ve done. The Daegrins and every other demon would come for you.”

“Your clan and entire race would cease to exist, and I’ll personally slit the throat of whoever gave you the orders to stab me in the back.”

“So, if you think I’m going to tell you where the Devourer’s blood essence is, then you’re fools.”

“You should have gotten the Devourer’s blood essence before betraying me.”

Zaglur removed his hand from his bleeding stomach, and the Velaris saw that Zaglur was no longer bleeding.

“It seems you have an artifact that can heal you.”

Zaglur spat the last blood in his mouth, then he wiped his mouth.

“Obviously. You might have destroyed my life-saving artifact, but I’m a Daegrin.”

Zaglur raised his right hand, which had five rings with closed eyes on them. The eyes snapped open, then they released dark and crimson light.

“I have many artifacts I can use to kill you three cowards.”

The Velaris remained calm despite the rise in Zaglur’s demonic energy.

The Velari in the middle looked at Zaglur’s necklace, which was a bone fang.

When he saw the cracks on its surface and the lack of demonic energy in it, he nodded slightly.

“We’ve destroyed the main artifact. We can kill him now.”

Zaglur’s left eye twitched when he heard this.

His necklace was an artifact that could form a very powerful defensive shield around him. This shield could only be destroyed by the attacks of at least a dozen Greater Demons or an attack of a Demon Lord.

It was the main concern of the Velaris, because if Zaglur was protected by the shield, he could call for reinforcements and it would put the Velaris and the Shadowgrave Clan in a dangerous position.

“It’s unfortunate that it has come to this.” The Velari in the middle said while raising his dagger and taking an attacking stance.

The other Velaris did the same thing.

Meanwhile, Zaglur scoffed at the Velari’s words.

“Make your last prayers, bastards. Because today will be your last.”

The Velaris said nothing, and Zaglur stared at them coldly.

A few moments later, the Velaris on the right and left moved.

One of the rings glowed, and Zaglur took a step back.

In the blink of an eye, the distance between him and the Velaris increased by hundreds of meters.

Another ring glowed, and a crimson bow appeared in his hand.

Another ring glowed, and when Zaglur pulled the string, a flaming arrow appeared.

Zaglur let go of it, and the flaming arrow flew at a speed some fighter jets could not reach.

Despite the speed and the sudden increase in distance between them and Zaglur, the Velaris were not taken off guard.

They were about to use their defensive skills, but then another ring on Zaglur’s right hand glowed.

The space between the flaming arrow and the Velaris folded, and to the disbelief of the Velaris, the flaming arrow appeared right in front of them.

BOOOM!!!

‘How cliché. I’ve read countless novels where the Hero is betrayed by their companions… but was I wrong to trust those who fought beside me for nearly six decades?’ ----- Betrayal. A word many live in fear of. A word some never expect… until it happens. A word that completely shatters one’s view of life. Just like any other heroic tale, Simon was the Hero of Earth, the one who defeated the Demon King and was about to end the war between races with his companions. Yet, in the end, he was betrayed by his own companions for reasons he never understood. Instead of finding death, Simon found rebirth. To his horror, he reincarnated as the very race he had devoted his entire life to exterminating… a race he despised, feared, and was disgusted by. Reborn as a demon infant within one of the most impoverished demon tribes, Simon found himself at the very bottom of a world he once sought to destroy. Fortunately, he was not entirely abandoned. His unique Seven Star Blessing, bestowed by his patron God, followed him through reincarnation. Armed with this Blessing and the Demonic Magic of his new race, Simon now harbors an ambition greater than ever before… to rise higher than he ever did as the Hero of Earth. To become a God. But the path forward is far from simple. Betrayals from those he would never expect. Endless trials and tribulations. And the lingering question of identity… Should he cling to his past as a human hero, or embrace his nature as a demon to survive? Can Simon abandon his hatred and live among demons? Will he erase his past entirely and fully embrace his demonic nature? Will his thirst for revenge drag him deeper into darkness… Or will he rise above it? In the end… Will he be devoured… or will he devour all?
