The Broken Halo Chapter 498

Chapter 498: The Cause

Once again, there was silence in this desolate frozen expanse.

Lucien and the Winter Monkey had their mouths wide open after seeing something that was completely unbelievable.

They had to ask themselves if what they were seeing was actually the truth and not an illusion.

Because it didn’t make sense to them.

They knew that Simon’s illusion ability was terrifying, especially Lucien who had already experienced it, but seeing it from an outsider’s perspective made the duo to be even more terrified of Simon’s illusion ability.

They saw how First Blade was speaking to Simon at one point in time, but even after Simon walked to the old demon’s back, he kept on talking to the air.

His words, facial expressions, and bodily movements made it certain that the old demon truly believed that he was talking to Simon, but they could see it.

It looked like First Blade was a blind fool, and Lucien could not help but wonder if that was how he looked like.

Aside from Simon’s terrifying illusion ability, the Chaos Wraps petrified the two demons of the north.

They all thought that the black wraps around his arms were just normal clothes, but the moment Simon used them as weapons, they turned a Greater Demon into ashes.

And his dying screams was still very fresh in their minds.

’Just who in the world is this guy?’

’A Fiend killing a Supreme Greater Demon? What did I just witness?’

Lucien knew that if he told anybody what he just witnessed, none would believe him.

Even Lucien himself had a hard time believing that what he just saw was real and not fake.

Lucien also realized something else, and his gaze fell on the long Chaos Wraps that were floating in the air and moving as the wind carried them.

’If he wanted, he could have used those black wraps to stop me from escaping when I tried escaping, but he didn’t.’

A chill suddenly moved across his body as he imagined himself screaming in pain and turning to ashes like First Blade.

’There’s no way I can escape. And I don’t even know what this crazy bastard is going to do next.’

’But one thing I’m sure of is that he definitely has a mental problem.’

Lucien released a frustrated sigh.

Meanwhile, Simon remained in the air.

Wind chaos runes hovered around him and kept him in the air.

The smile of madness he previously had was no more, and his expression was extremely solemn as he stared at the spot where First Blade died.

His ashes had long fallen into the sea, so none of it remained.

However, Simon did not feel any sort of relief, pride, or achievement after killing a Supreme Greater Demon as a Fiend.

He was bothered.

Extremely bothered about what happened to him.

He thought he had resolved his trauma by killing Pellin, but now he was certain that the problem he had was more severe than aerd trauma.

’Whenever I’m in that state, I feel insane. But at the same time, I feel like that second personality of mine is in control of this madness.’

’But the problem is that no matter what, the urge to kill the person that triggers that state must be satiated.’

’If the person is weak, that state or personality of mine is going to torture the person. But if the person is strong, then I would not mind doing absolutely anything to kill the person.’

He glanced at Lucien and the Winter Monkey.

’Even if it means exposing one of my key secrets and arsenal.’

Simon held the bridge of his nose and released a frustrated sigh.

The Chaos Wraps turning First Blade to ashes was not shocking to him because he already knew that it could do such a thing.

However, he only wanted to use the ability when he had no other choice.

The Chaos Wraps would turn anything he held and tried to use as a weapon, and living beings were not excluded.

Lilith told him this over a month ago.

If Simon was alone and he was completely certain that he was alone, he would have used the Chaos Wraps a long time ago.

Using the Chaos Wraps in front of the Winter Monkey and Lucien was not part of his plans at all, but that was ruined.

With a thought, Simon recalled the Chaos Wraps to his arms.

As they curled around his arms, he tried to figure out what was wrong with him and why he always lost himself whenever he heard the words- Play and Game.

Not being able to hear those two words was a problem, a big problem because any of his comrades could casually tell him to play a game and he would instantly feel like killing the demon.

He had to find a solution, and he had to find a solution to this problem as quickly as possible.

’Pellin’s torture was horrendous and would definitely traumatize anybody, but I’ve killed him already. I even killed his wife and son, so I should not be reacting like this to his words.’

’Then that leaves the Soul Devouring Centipede.’

Simon’s eyes narrowed, and his expression became more serious.

’Pellin told me that the reason why it’s called the Soul Devouring Centipede is because whenever it chews on the heart of a demon, it would feel like it’s also chewing on the soul, but that does not mean it’s actually devouring the soul.’

Simon paused, then he controlled the wind chaos runes to bring him to the ice floor.

’But what if the Soul Devouring Centipede is actually devoured a portion of my soul? What if it actually had the ability to devour a demon’s soul?’

Simon’s gaze sharpened.

’I was planning on removing it when I’m ready to escape the Shadowgrave Clan, but it seems I might have to change my plans… even though it would definitely draw the attention of the Grave Lords.’

Simon’s feet finally touched the ground, and his eyes glinted with a cold and calculating glint.

‘How cliché. I’ve read countless novels where the Hero is betrayed by their companions… but was I wrong to trust those who fought beside me for nearly six decades?’ ----- Betrayal. A word many live in fear of. A word some never expect… until it happens. A word that completely shatters one’s view of life. Just like any other heroic tale, Simon was the Hero of Earth, the one who defeated the Demon King and was about to end the war between races with his companions. Yet, in the end, he was betrayed by his own companions for reasons he never understood. Instead of finding death, Simon found rebirth. To his horror, he reincarnated as the very race he had devoted his entire life to exterminating… a race he despised, feared, and was disgusted by. Reborn as a demon infant within one of the most impoverished demon tribes, Simon found himself at the very bottom of a world he once sought to destroy. Fortunately, he was not entirely abandoned. His unique Seven Star Blessing, bestowed by his patron God, followed him through reincarnation. Armed with this Blessing and the Demonic Magic of his new race, Simon now harbors an ambition greater than ever before… to rise higher than he ever did as the Hero of Earth. To become a God. But the path forward is far from simple. Betrayals from those he would never expect. Endless trials and tribulations. And the lingering question of identity… Should he cling to his past as a human hero, or embrace his nature as a demon to survive? Can Simon abandon his hatred and live among demons? Will he erase his past entirely and fully embrace his demonic nature? Will his thirst for revenge drag him deeper into darkness… Or will he rise above it? In the end… Will he be devoured… or will he devour all?
