The Broken Halo Chapter 56

Chapter 56: Changes

When a demon successfully completed their Coming of Age rite and awakened their Demon Heart, their chaos flame is born in their Demon Heart.

The reason why an awakened Demon Heart is very crucial to every demon is because that is when their chaos flame is born in their heart, and it is this chaos flame that truly makes a demon unique, not the heart itself.

The chaos flame is the source of a demon’s power. It is their life force and their Will made manifest.

When a chaos flame is born, the demon’s heart is called Flickering Heart, and as Simon observed his heart, he knew why.

Inside his heart was a flickering, small, unstable flame that looked like it would go out.

Simon would have panicked if he didn’t know better, but he knew that despite this flame looking like it would go out, it would never go out as long as nothing extreme happened to him.

’My chaos flame is pale silver with a faint orange hue to it. I have a wind affinity? And… a potential spatial affinity?!’

’That’s very, very, very surprising. I know this affinity comes from my demonic cat bloodine, but the chances of a demon developing a spatial affinity is extremely rare… Especially a demon with a Common Bloodline.’

’As long as I master my demonic energy output and don’t emit a silver coloured demonic energy but an azure coloured demonic energy mixed with an orange hue, nobody should be able to know that I have spatial affinity.’

The gears in Simon’s head spun rapidly as he thought of everything he should do before the Pallbearers or any high-ranking member of the clan came to meet him.

’But what sort of evolution has my bloodline gone through for it to awaken a spatial affinity? Did it awaken a portion of its ancestral and true roots? Was the eyes I saw back then the eyes of… my ancestor?’

’What is this bloodline called? I know it should have a proper name, but I don’t know it. Maybe if I’m able to improve it to the Noble grade the name would come to me.’

’And my one-horned demon bloodline… The faint orange hue on my chaos flame means I have a fire affinity but it’s quite poor, though it’s not surprising since it has not undergone an evolution like my demon cat bloodline.’

Simon inhaled then exhaled deeply. He glanced at the door, and when he saw that nobody had entered yet, he continued observing the other changes to his body.

He looked to his right, and there he saw a mirror which had been in the room from the very beginning because it was a normal thing for demons to undergo a change in their appearance, and it was better for many demons to see their changes before another demon pointed it out to them.

Simon stood, then he walked to the mirror.

“Hmm.”

He held his chin slightly with slightly narrowed eyes, then he held the tip of his hair and his horn.

There were several changes to his physical body, and one of them was that he had grown a few inches.

Simon was now 6’1, and he was taken aback at first because he was just sixteen but he was so tall.

But when he recalled that he was a demon and that there were many other demons his age who were taller than him, he didn’t sweat it.

Another change was his eyes.

His eyes were now sky-blue with faint silver at the edges of his pupils.

His teeth were much sharper, stronger, and slightly longer than before. They were the teeth of a predator and Simon was certain he could use them to tear off a chunk of flesh from even a fellow Lesser Demon.

Then his fingers and toes.

His fingernails and toenails were now thicker and darker. They also had faint orange lines at their tips and edges, and when Simon flexed his fingers, they elongated into claws.

’I can also cause flames to appear on them. But it won’t be wise to do that now when I have very little demonic energy.’

The there was his hair.

His hair was no longer a mixture of black and white but pure white like the midnight. It was also long and was reaching just below his neck.

Then his horn.

His horn which he always had since birth was now longer and darker.

’I could kill somebody with this actually.’

Simon chuckled inwardly, then he turned and looked at his back.

When he saw that there was no tail, he nodded.

’Good. No more tail and no more fur on my body. Only a pale grey skin.’

And then his ears.

His ears were just like that of a cat’s ears, but it was more sensitive just like his eyes.

His eyes could see a lot clearer and in more details while his ears could pick up sounds, and even the faint whispers of the wind and vibrations.

’I guess that’s all.’

After checking out the changes to his physical appearance, he looked at the door once again.

“Still no one?”,

Corey decided not to think much about it. It gave him more time to adjust to his new body.

’Should I bring it out now or later?’

’Now is better.’

Simon exhaled deeply, then he placed his hand deeply inside his throat.

He made gurgling sounds and he had the urge to remove his hand from his throat, but he didn’t.

Not until…

Blerrrggghhhh!

Clang

Clang

Clang

He vomited copious amount of disgusting stomach fluid, but the sound of an object hitting the floor echoed in the room.

Corey wiped his mouth, then he walked forward and picked up a ring.

This ring was the Miser’s Ring Zaglur gave to him.

Because of the Pallbearer that appeared back then, what he did was to swallow the ring much to the shock and disbelief of the Pallbearer and the other Velaris back then.

Swallowing the ring is the only reason he still had it with him.

’Disgusting.’

Simon frowned as he wondered if he should wear the ring with his vomit on it, but as he was pondering on this issue, the door to the room opened and he decided that he could not wear the ring as it was.

He calmly kept it his pocket.

’I’ll clean it later.’

‘How cliché. I’ve read countless novels where the Hero is betrayed by their companions… but was I wrong to trust those who fought beside me for nearly six decades?’ ----- Betrayal. A word many live in fear of. A word some never expect… until it happens. A word that completely shatters one’s view of life. Just like any other heroic tale, Simon was the Hero of Earth, the one who defeated the Demon King and was about to end the war between races with his companions. Yet, in the end, he was betrayed by his own companions for reasons he never understood. Instead of finding death, Simon found rebirth. To his horror, he reincarnated as the very race he had devoted his entire life to exterminating… a race he despised, feared, and was disgusted by. Reborn as a demon infant within one of the most impoverished demon tribes, Simon found himself at the very bottom of a world he once sought to destroy. Fortunately, he was not entirely abandoned. His unique Seven Star Blessing, bestowed by his patron God, followed him through reincarnation. Armed with this Blessing and the Demonic Magic of his new race, Simon now harbors an ambition greater than ever before… to rise higher than he ever did as the Hero of Earth. To become a God. But the path forward is far from simple. Betrayals from those he would never expect. Endless trials and tribulations. And the lingering question of identity… Should he cling to his past as a human hero, or embrace his nature as a demon to survive? Can Simon abandon his hatred and live among demons? Will he erase his past entirely and fully embrace his demonic nature? Will his thirst for revenge drag him deeper into darkness… Or will he rise above it? In the end… Will he be devoured… or will he devour all?
