Aika closed the distance between her and the demon in a blur.
She had her katana, which was now covered in black flames, held to the side with both hands as she mentally prepared to strike him with a vertical slash across his chest.
But truth be told, her heart was racing wildly because even from the moment she had chosen to fight, she wasn’t sure that she would win.
This was the first time she had ever felt this way. This was the first time that she was going into a battle with fear, hesitation, and doubt in her heart.
As one who had always prided herself on being able to find her opponent’s weak spots given enough time, she was completely unsettled, because as she looked at the being in front of her, she couldn’t find any weaknesses.
Yet despite that, she gritted her teeth, closed the distance, and slashed her blade upwards with everything she had.
However, the demon had leapt back effortlessly, avoiding the blade by a mere hair’s breadth.
He had a slowly growing grin on his face as he watched her advance without slowing, bringing her blade forward in an horizontal slash this time around.
Still, he dodged it with casual ease, and it was only after the fifth consecutive strike that he began using the wooden part of his spear to block her attacks, almost as if he was toying with her.
“Not bad for a lowly being such as yourself. Though I must say that if this is all you have, then you are beginning to bore me.”
Hearing that, Aika gritted her teeth and tried to increase her speed. As if that would do any good against the smiling demon in front of her.
But then he suddenly began to attack by thrusting his spear forward.
Aika managed to evade the first few thrusts, but…
’Fast!’
Her hair was whipped and torn wild by the wind of his strikes, and thin cuts opened on her cheeks, dripping beads of blood.
But the onslaught did not stop, and so, Aika, who had been attacking fiercely, suddenly found herself putting all her speed into not having her head taken off.
’Tsk. This spear is bothersome.’
The spear thrust forward again, but this time, Aika did not only dodge by tilting her head and body at the last possible second. She immediately reached out afterwards and grabbed the spear’s shaft under her armpit, then swung her katana in a deadly arc toward his neck.
But with effortless grace, the demon grinned and arched backwards, while also letting go of his spear.
The moment the blade wreathed in cold flames cut through empty air, he straightened and, with his hand balled into a fist, lunged to strike Aika directly in the face.
However, his fist passed through a storm of ravens that had suddenly begun to disperse in different directions.
“Interesting.” The demon mused as he looked around at the dispersing flock.
“You have these strange flames of yours that somehow seem to corrode rather than burn. If I did not cover my weapon with my aura, it would have been ruined by now.” His eyes darted to the many ravens around. “And you are also very elusive. However…”
He crouched, and at that moment, Aika’s blade passed over his head.
She had sneakily swapped with a raven and had attempted to decapitate him from behind, but it seemed he had already anticipated her movement.
He immediately straightened after her blade missed its mark, and since she was open after the swing, he swung his fist.
His fist connected with her jaw, breaking the menpo mask, breaking her jaw, popping her right eye, and sending her flying and crashing violently into the stone walls of the ruined courtyard.
“I have already figured you out, and with these party tricks, I have to say that you are not as entertaining as I had hoped you would be…”
A deep scowl of disgust twisted his features.
“When you bring magic into a weapons fight, things move from being an art to just downright cheap.”
Meanwhile, Aika was coughing up blood. Her body was in bad condition, and she was using her hand to support her broken jaw.
She was lucky that her head had not been twisted around, or snapped clean off after that blow. However, her ears were ringing and her vision was blurry.
At this point, anyone else would have fallen into despair.
The being in front of her was like an impossible wall that could never be scaled.
But instead of yielding, Aika could feel her rage grow as the seconds passed.
She was utterly determined to kill this demon, and kill him, she would!
At that moment, hundreds of daffodils suddenly appeared in the air. They didn’t linger and immediately turned into emerald mist that flowed towards her to regenerate her shattered jaw and broken bones.
At the same time, the spell that Aika had been preparing on the side had finished forming.
“You don’t know when to give up, do you?”
The voice of the demon cut through the cold air. His spear had flown back into his grip, and he was now watching her stand after taking such a devastating blow.
“And you don’t get it, do you? Magic is nothing but a cheap crutch against someone like me. To prove that, I will defend against this trick of yours.” He pointed to the massive magic circle that Aika had conjured above.
The black circle was now like a halo that was almost as large as the sunken courtyard itself.
The demon grinned. “But after I defend, I will attack. If you are still here by then, nothing will be left of you.”
Aika, who had now fully risen, gritted her teeth. Without paying any heed to his rambling, she raised a hand and brought it down.
In response, a massive beam of the flames of decay slammed down atop the demon. For a moment, the flames did not stop, and continued to pour down relentlessly, incinerating the stone beneath him.
But then, Aika’s eyes widened as she saw a red light shine brightly through the dark torrent.
And then, like a physical blade, it erupted upward and shattered the magic ring above.
The pillar of flames parted and dissipated, revealing the demon, but he was covered in what looked like red energy.
Aika could tell at a glance that it was his aura.
The being had actually coated himself in a dense armor of his aura.
“My turn,” he grinned as he crouched into a deadly stance. He lowered his center of gravity, holding his spear diagonally across his chest with a wide grip, as if he was preparing to slash her from where he stood.
“I warned you. If you are still here by then, nothing will be left of you.”
Aika frowned because at that moment, the red energy around him soared. It was so dense that it began to warp the air around him, cracking the stone floor under the sheer weight of his power.
And notifications had begun to pop up again in red.

“Oh, and by the way, you cannot block this.”
The being added, his eyes flashing with malicious glee as the crimson energy continued to soar.
“Spear art: Shattered Stars.”
Suddenly, what looked like red stars formed in front of the demon, made from the energy surrounding him.
Despite being red, the stars shone as brightly as real stars.
At this point, Aika could no longer see the demon. She could not see anything. In fact, all she saw now was white, and death coming.
