Before long, Edmund left with more than half the soldiers and knights.

Roderic watched them ride away with a small smile on his face.

’Alright,’ he thought, turning around. ’It’s time to get this started.’

His gaze swept over the remaining soldiers and knights.

There weren’t many of them, only twenty soldiers and five knights to be precise, and all of them were incredibly nervous.

But that wouldn’t be a problem for Roderic.

’’You all remember the plan?’’ he asked loudly.

Nervous nods appeared left and right.

’’Good,’’ Roderic continued loudly. ’’Then spread out and get into positions!’’

The soldiers immediately began moving, each carrying a bow and sword.

Some disappeared into the buildings lining the main road, while others carefully made their way into the forest.

Within minutes, the streets of Riverwood had become completely deserted.

Roderic remained where he was for a moment.

’At most twenty minutes,’ he thought. ’That’s all we have.’

He grabbed hold of both his hooked blades, his heart pounding rapidly in his chest.

Letting out a deep breath, Roderic began moving to his position as well.

It didn’t take long before he reached a building near the village entrance.

Frederic, Paul, John and Peter were already waiting for him inside.

’’Young lord,’’ they greeted politely.

Roderic gave a small nod to them.

’’Prepare yourselves mentally,’’ he said. ’’I can’t afford any hesitation when it comes to my orders.’’

All four of them nodded, clenching their weapons tightly.

With that said, Roderic walked up to the second floor, settling in front of a window that overlooked the entrance.

’A classic hit-and-run strategy,’ he thought. ’That shouldn’t be too difficult to perform, right?’

Minutes ticked by in absolute silence.

With each passing second, the tension grew thicker and thicker.

Knights and soldiers alike gradually began holding their breaths.

Suddenly, Roderic’s eyes narrowed.

A small cloud of dust had appeared far on the horizon.

’’There,’’ he muttered.

Behind him, his four retainers briefly glanced outside.

Though their faces began growing pale, fierce determination had appeared in their eyes.

Roderic stared out of the window for a moment longer.

’’The scouts’ numbers were accurate,’’ he finally said. ’’There are two hundred of them.’’

With that said, he stood up and turned around.

’’Get ready,’’ he commanded. ’’And only strike once the first batch of arrows has been fired.’’

His retainers nodded quickly.

But Roderic had long since walked down to the ground floor.

He quickly left the building, rushing over to a batch of crates on the corner of the road.

Roderic ducked behind them, immediately glancing into the distance through a tiny gap.

Thump! Thump! Thump!

His heart was beating so violently, he could barely hear anything outside.

’Calm down,’ he thought, fingers tightening around his blades.

Roderic took a slow breath.

Unfortunately, that didn’t help one bit.

’Fine.’

Roderic closed his eyes for a moment.

He deliberately dug through the memories of his past life, searching for the ones he hated remembering most.

Then, one by one, he forced them to the surface.

That seemed to do the trick.

His pounding heartbeat gradually slowed, while the tension in his body faded along with it.

Roderic slowly opened his eyes, a cold glint flashing through them.

’Much better,’ he thought.

The sound of galloping horses grew louder with each passing second.

Roderic glanced through the crates, locking onto the massive dust cloud instantly.

Soon enough, the first riders appeared.

Then the dozens more behind them.

’Wait,’ he thought, removing his blades from their sheaths.

One of the Deres knights at the very front raised his hand.

’’HOOOOO!’’ he shouted.

Simultaneously, all the soldiers began slowing down behind him.

Only then did the logs on the street come into view.

’’HALT!’’ the same knight shouted instantly.

The command echoed across the streets.

Dozens of horses neighed as their riders abruptly pulled on their reins.

Within moments, the entire advance force had come to a stop.

Roderic’s eyes narrowed slightly.

’Most are One Seals,’ he thought, still watching through the gap. ’But I can sense three Two Seals.’

That wasn’t outside his expectations, which meant the plan could go on.

Just then, several of the Deres knights moved to the front.

They exchanged a few words before one of them pointed towards the fallen trees.

Almost immediately, some of them and their soldiers began dismounting.

’Perfect…’

Roderic waited patiently.

Now was not the time to act yet.

A loud voice suddenly rang out through the streets.

’’Pathetic!’’

One of the Deres knights shook his head in disgust.

The one who’d given the command before glanced towards the knights.

’’Don’t be careless,’’ an older voice rang out. ’’There could be ambushes.’’

Roderic’s gaze locked onto the two.

’Both are Two Seal Knights,’ he recognized, a grin spreading across his face.

’’They’re just a bunch of cowardly peasants,’’ the first knight cursed. ’’You’re way too careful, old man.’’

The knight pulled a longsword out of its sheath and carelessly moved to the front.

A sigh escaped the other knight’s mouth as he raised two fingers.

Several soldiers immediately began moving to scout the sides, clearly fearing ambushes.

Aura had already begun gathering around the first knight’s longsword.

The bright glow rapidly grew brighter as he calmly approached the barricade.

Roderic’s grin only grew wider.

’Keep going,’ he thought.

One step after another, the first knight raised his sword above him.

The aura surrounding the blade began surging wildly.

CLANK!

The knight froze, his eyes darting to the ground.

CRUNCH!

’’AAAAARGH!’’

A bloodcurdling scream erupted from his mouth.

The massive bear trap had snapped shut around his lower leg, its iron teeth crushing straight through his armor and bones.

Blood splattered everywhere as sand and dust flew into the air.

The bright blue aura disappeared instantly as the sword slipped from the knight’s hand.

’’FUCK! MY LEG!’’

The Two Seal Knight collapsed back, reaching for his leg.

Except… an empty space spurting blood was all that remained.

But it wasn’t over yet.

Distracted by the sudden scream, the scouting soldiers glanced away.

Out of pure instinct, they all began reaching for their weapons and a better place to assess the situation.

Alas… that wasn’t the right thing to do.

CLANK! CLANK! CLANK!

SNAP! SNAP! SNAP!

’’AAAAARGH!’’

’’UGHAAAAA!’’

Screams rang out left and right simultaneously.

In an instant, everything became complete and utter chaos.
